The Gig Is Up - Getting Those Gigs
Time for your music dreams to come true – playing live onstage to
masses of screaming fans…or at least a room full of people listening
in to your creations. Though the ultimate goal might be a good-paying
gig, an artist or band just starting out may have to take on some
freebies. Consider them as experience. Use this list as a start on how
to get gigs, a checklist of the basics, and an idea starter.
The Prep:
Talent – know your style, be solid in your performance abilities
before you take on too big a gig

Art of the Soil: Free Community Art Workshop series
The Little Landers Historical Society is pleased to present Art of the Soil, a community art workshop created by District Two artist in residence Helen Lessick. The workshop begins on Saturday Sept. 30, 2006 and continues for 8 sessions. Each session will run from 9-11am.
Stop by one workshop or come for the entire series. Materials will be provided. Each participant receives Helen's original Soil Sample exhibition checklist, created in conjunction with her residency.
In Art of the Soil you will learn to see California soil as a canvas. Learn how soil affects land and community, landscape painting and property values. You will make maps of your home and community and participate in creating a wall-sized map of the Tujunga watershed.
Artist Workshops
Recognizing that art can improve the riding experience and make the system more inviting, Metro Art commissions artists to incorporate art into a wide array of transportation projects throughout Los Angeles County. From bus stops to rail stations, streetscapes to bus interiors, construction fences to poetry works, art creates a sense of place and engages transit riders.
Come learn about up-coming transit related public art opportunities and how to apply. Opportunities include stations for the new Mid-City/Exposition Line from
downtown Los Angeles to Culver City. The workshops are free and open to all.

I just received this email from Sally Blakemore in Santa Fe:
John Hubenthal, Dean of the New Hampshire Art Institute, is dying from brain cancer. He is one of the funniest and most creative people I have ever known who has a wonderful perspective on his own passing. Not only did he jump on a motorcycle as soon as he found out about the cancer, and rode from Boston to California, alone to think and meditate, stopping in Santa Fe for a marimba blessing and holy water prepared by Liz Paterson and her spiritual group, but he used the time to be ever closer to his son and wife.
He gave himself a wake at a local pub, with a cake filled with Day of the Dead images from Mexico and the words on the top were: BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME. He has embraced the experience of dying with such wisdom, inclusion and humor that the institute is naming a scholarship fund for him to support young artists. If you know of anyone who can give to this artistic ART BEGETS ART scholarship fund named after John Hubenthal, please pass it on.
Everyone expected House Republicans to give up efforts to kill NPR and PBS after a massive public outcry stopped them last year. But they've just voted to eliminate funding for NPR and PBS -- unbelievably, starting with programs like "Sesame Street."
Public broadcasting would lose nearly a quarter of its federal funding this year. Even worse, all funding would be eliminated in two years--threatening one of the last remaining sources of watchdog journalism.
Sign the petition telling Congress to save NPR and PBS again this year:

Last year, millions of us took action to save NPR and PBS, and Congress listened. We can do it again if enough of us sign the petition in time.
