I just received this email from Sally Blakemore in Santa Fe:
John Hubenthal, Dean of the New Hampshire Art Institute, is dying from brain cancer. He is one of the funniest and most creative people I have ever known who has a wonderful perspective on his own passing. Not only did he jump on a motorcycle as soon as he found out about the cancer, and rode from Boston to California, alone to think and meditate, stopping in Santa Fe for a marimba blessing and holy water prepared by Liz Paterson and her spiritual group, but he used the time to be ever closer to his son and wife.
He gave himself a wake at a local pub, with a cake filled with Day of the Dead images from Mexico and the words on the top were: BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME. He has embraced the experience of dying with such wisdom, inclusion and humor that the institute is naming a scholarship fund for him to support young artists. If you know of anyone who can give to this artistic ART BEGETS ART scholarship fund named after John Hubenthal, please pass it on.
His creativity will be sorely missed on this earth!
Read on:
The New Hampshire Art Institute has started a scholarship fund in John's name and we're all trying to raise $5,000 to get equal matching funds. John is too bashful to ask anyone but his siblings to help on this, but I thought I'd get you in the loop. Seems like everyone I know is in a cash flow crunch right now. I'm no exception. I'm not bashful about hitting up all the people I've given money to for Girl Scout cookies, walkathons, and baseball teams over the years, though. No donation is too small. I'm not asking you personally per se -- you always have creative ways of helping others, and I know you have a warm place in your heart for John. This means a tremendous amount to him. If you have any bright ideas, checks can be made out to "New Hampshire Institute of Art, memo: Hubenthal Scholarship". Or cash (if you collect cash, be sure to keep a record of name, address and amount), or if anyone wants to do it by credit card, they can call Katie Berger at NHAI 603-836-2546. I'm going to send them batches of stuff every few weeks. It's tax deductible, and contributors will get an acknowledgement letter. If there's nothing you can do, don't worry. I just thought you'd want to know.
