The Arts Council for Long Beach and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency
announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select artists for temporary
public artwork for vacant storefronts in redevelopment areas within the City
of Long Beach.
Historical / Cultural Background
The City of Long Beach is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse
cities in the nation. As the fifth largest city in California, Long Beach
plays an important role in shaping the identity of the state. Long Beach is
an attractive and accessible coastal gateway that serves as an important
tourist attraction and is home to the Queen Mary, Boeing Aerospace, the Long
Beach Aquarium, an expansive beach front and one of the largest ports in the
world.
Photo contest to promote charity
Photographers around the world are invited to compete for the
Photographers Giving Back Photo Award, aimed at highlighting injustice,
catastrophes and human disasters with the intention to help and make a
change for the better. Deadline: January 4, 2009.
The competition -- formally know as the Photo Award -- will award a
total of US$30,000 in 12 categories. Pictures must have been taken in
2008 but do not need to have been published. Submissions can only be
done online.
The winners will be announced on March 6, 2009 at Berns Salonger in
Stockholm, Sweden.

Arts Fellowship is awarded through the Los Angeles Municipal Art
Gallery Associates (LAMAGA), a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that
supports the Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. The Feitelson
Foundation award was conceived by the Feitelsons, seminal Los Angeles
Modernist painters, and their friends, as a way to give encouragement to
artists early in their careers by offering financial grants.

REDCAT is accepting proposals for original performance works for the
2009 New Original Works Festival. The Festival is designed to support
the development and presentation of contemporary performance in Los
Angeles through a three-week interdisciplinary program of dance,
theater, music and multi-disciplinary works. Entering its sixth year,
the Festival features a flexible schedule to accommodate a variety of
short works and some longer projects in Los Angeles premieres, and
provides development support through technical assistance, access to the
theater’s sound and lighting inventory and an honorarium.

The site currently houses exclusive images ranging from the prestigious marble lavatory at the Metropolitan Museum of New York, behind-closed-doors shots of the Hermitage’s latrines and the decaying (yet still flushing) pictures of the MongolianArt Museum’s commodes.
