of Day of the Dead

From October 19 to November 27, 2009, El Pueblo Historical Monument will present Sacred Memories: Cross-Cultural Celebrations of Day of the Dead. Sacred Memories follows El Pueblo's acclaimed 2007 exhibition which explored celebrations that venerate the departed including Dia de los Muertos, first observed by the indigenous people of Latin America, China's Qingming, and other rituals practiced in United States, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Artists are asked to submit for consideration two and three-dimensional work (including ofrendas/altars) that examines rituals honoring the deceased and/or pays tribute to departed ancestors.

The Artist's Studio: An Artist in Residence Program - Call for proposals

at One Colorado, Pasadena, CA

The Armory Center for the Arts and One Colorado invite artists to apply for
a three month
paid Artist in Residence program that is a unique opportunity for an artist
who enjoys
interacting with the general public in a retail environment. The program is
designed to bring
art into a public space where both the artist and the public will learn from
and be inspired by
the interactions.

* The Artist's Studio will revolve on a 3-month basis with one artist
residency at a time. The
first residency will be July 16 through October 15, 2009. The next residency
will begin
October 16, and conclude in early January, 2010.

Readymade Film Fest is now taking submissions

The 8th annual Readymade Film Fest is currently taking submissions for
this summer's festivals!

That's right folks! The Readymade Film Fest, LA's favorite underground
film festival, returns this summer with more films for your viewing
pleasure. This year's festival will be hosted by LA's newsnest art
gallery; The Federal Art Project. RMFF co-founder George Gomez explains
that "FAP is the perfect home for the Readymade Film Fest. Its producers
and the art are right there along side with what RMFF stands for and
what we try to achieve every year. If you have not been to FAP yet, be
prepared to enter an new gem in downtown LA."

Continuing with the success of last year, RMFF will also be doing both
Coast to Coast screenings happing in Los Angeles, CA and Washignton D.C.

CoachArt: Volunteer for 1hr a week with a child in the arts, music (Los Angeles area)

CoachArt's mission is to improve the quality of life for underprivileged children and adolescents with Chronic and Life-threatening illnesses by providing free, personal lessons in the arts and athletics.

We look for experienced professionals and amateurs in wide range of activities including art, music, photography, yoga, creative writing, acting, dancing and more to donate instruction to our students. Our goal is to promote normalcy and personal development in kids who truly need it.

• CoachArt matches volunteers one-on-one with students based on their geographic proximity, activity interest and availability for ten weekly lessons.

• Coaches teach an activity to one student or a group of students either in a studio setting or in the student's home

OPEN CALL for polaroid submissions (deadline July 17)

Hibbleton Gallery + ISM: a community project announce an open call for polaroid 600 series photography submissions.

We are looking for quality polaroids to exhibit in a special show at Hibbleton Gallery opening Friday August 7th, 2009.

During the reception we will have a designated wall dedicated to 'night of' submissions... be sure to bring your camera and let us celebrate the polaroid 600 series.
