Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling 2019-2020 Artist-In-Residence Program

The Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling has opened its application process for its annual Artist-In-Residence Program.

Visual artists working across disciplines, including conceptual art and textile arts are encouraged to apply for the residency that begins in September 2019 and concludes with an exhibition that runs through September 2020 at the Museum located at 898 St. Nicholas Avenue at 155th Street in famed Sugar Hill section of Harlem, NY. The residency provides a free, unfurnished 450 square-foot studio space, Wi-Fi and a $7,000 honorarium. The residency program also includes open studio events and the aforementioned culminating exhibition in the studio. The artist-in-residence must be committed to public engagement through their artistic practice and to working with the Museum’s primary audience of three- to eight-year-old children.

To be eligible applicants must be located within the NY Tri-State area and be comfortable working with children. The artist’s practice should reflect a relationship and sensitivity to the demographics, neighborhood, and other facets of the unique history of Sugar Hill.

This will mark the fifth year of the Artist-In-Residence Program at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum. Past Artists-In-Residence are David Shrobe (2015-2016), Derek Fordjour (2016-2017), Leslie Jimenez (2017-2018) and the current Artist-In-Residence is Damien Davis. Each year the Artist-In-Residence program provides an opportunity to not just show the work of the selected artist but allows the artist to instill in children a love of art, culture and our community while learning from them as well. Upon his selection as Artist-In-Residence Damien Davis said “It is an honor to be selected as the artist-in-residence this year at the Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art and Storytelling. I am looking forward to spending my time connecting and collaborating with such a young audience, and being part of an environment where stories and ideas are facilitated through the honesty and sincerity of children will be a wonderful experience.”

Artists interested in being the next Artist-In-Residence at the Museum are encouraged to submit their applications to the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling beginning February 1, 2019.
