Open call: IdeasCity New Orleans

The New Museum announces an open call for participants in IdeasCity New Orleans, the next edition of the institution’s civic platform that explores the future of cities with art and culture as a driving force. The residency will take place April 15–20, 2019 and is open to emerging practitioners working at the intersections of urbanism, art, design, community activism, and technology, and is led by V. Mitch McEwen, Curator of IdeasCity, and the cofounder and principal of A(n) Office, a collaborative design studio in Detroit and New York.

IdeasCity New Orleans invites makers and thinkers from New Orleans and around the world to join this week-long studio program to prototype cultural, ecological, and material strategies designed for the 2019 theme of Everyday Festival. Participation in the studio residency is determined through an open submission process. Up to 20 applicants will be selected as Fellows by an international panel of artists and curators.

IdeasCity New Orleans Rockefeller Fellows will work alongside the Propeller Incubator in New Orleans, the annual New Orleans Homecoming Project, and the newly relaunched New Orleans African American Museum to explore the possibilities of the festival as a creative platform for environmental justice, new ideas, and urban space. Fellows will be expected to collaborate on a proposal and prototype for a festival related to everyday urbanism—groceries, streetwear, pedicabs, stormwater management, roof maintenance, fish fries, wind energy, incarceration, asphalt, air quality, local plant species, or other topics. Fellows’ projects will occupy and transform the Bell ArtSpace Campus and the grounds of the New Orleans African American Museum in Tremé—the oldest surviving Black community in the United States. Special consideration will be given to candidates from New Orleans exploring environmental justice.

Beyond the Fellows’ own projects, the five-day studio residency will also include festival-related workshops, site visits, lectures, and discussions with local experts, including artists, designers, policymakers, and community members. IdeasCity New Orleans will culminate in a high-profile public program featuring conversations, artist talks, prototypes, and demos by an array of local and internationally acclaimed cultural agents whose work engages the forces that define our cities.

Applications will be accepted until January 15, 2019; candidates will be informed of their application status by February 1, 2019. IdeasCity New Orleans will require a full-time commitment from April 15 through April 20, 2019. An honorarium, as well as meals, will be provided for all Fellows. Lodging will be provided for Fellows traveling to New Orleans.
