In today’s world, it’s critical that visual arts managers understand all aspects of an organization’s operations – that includes developing programs and budgeting as well as technology to creating strategic partnerships. That’s why I’m so proud to be supporting the Catherine Hannah Behrend Fellowship for Rising Female Leaders in Visual Arts Management. As a board member of 92nd Street Y, I believe that 92Y is the perfect ‘learning lab’ for arts management and has so much to offer rising talent. I’m thrilled to be able to make it possible to share some of the tremendous expertise at 92Y to strengthen the next generation of arts leaders.

92Y Announces Call for Applicants for Catherine Hannah Behrend Fellowship for Rising Female Leaders in Visual Arts Administration
Fellows Receive Immersive Education and Mentorship as Part of 92Y's Women inPower Fellowship
92nd Street Y has announced the opening call for applicants for the third year of the Catherine Hannah Behrend Fellowship, a specialty track within 92Y’s Women inPower Fellowship program, to provide mentorship and support to emerging female leaders working in visual arts administration, including public program development, education, fundraising and visitor services at museums, art schools and more. The free year-long fellowship provides fellows with an immersive experience including monthly one-on-one meetings with senior 92Y staff in marketing, development, innovation, arts education, finance, program development and more. Fellows will also receive direct guidance from executive-level mentors and a customized curriculum tailored to impart the skills needed to be a successful visual arts leader. Applications for the Catherine Hannah Behrend Fellowship are now open.
The current Fellows are Marissa Gutiérrez-Vicario, Founder & Executive Director, Art and Resistance Through Education (ARTE) and Holly Shen, Director and Curator of Visual Arts, Brooklyn Academy of Music. Emily Kernan Rafferty, President Emerita of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, serve as program Mentors.
As a component of the Behrend Fellowship, Fellows plan and execute a visual arts project on a topic meaningful to them. A stipend is provided to cover costs associated with executing the project, as well as travel and other incidentals related to the Fellowship. For their project, the 2017 Fellows Adjoa Jones de Almeida from the Brooklyn Museum and Elizabeth Gwinn from the Studio Museum in Harlem worked together to launch CultureSwap--a two week long, city-wide initiative in March 2018 that paired together arts and culture professionals for in-depth conversations about their day-to-day work and challenges. Afterward the nearly 100 participants convened for a facilitated conversation at the Brooklyn Museum to discuss their experiences learning about their partners work and institutions. 92nd Street Y will oversee CultureSwap 2019; registration will begin in January 2019 and initiative will take place in early Spring.
The Catherine Hannah Behrend Fellowship is supported by Catherine Hannah Behrend, who is currently an adjunct professor at NYU and FIT. She is also the founder of Ventures in Vision art tours, a longstanding member of the 92Y Board of Directors and has a distinguished career of public service in both the arts and economic development under six New York City Mayoral Administrations.
“92nd Street Y, which offers thousands of public programs annually, is the perfect ‘learning lab’ for future cultural institution leaders,” said Catherine Hannah Behrend. “It’s been thrilling to see first-hand the exciting and immense talent of this new generation of visual arts administrators, and how the Behrend Fellowship has helped them flourish.”
