The Autry National Center is a history museum dedicated to exploring and
sharing the stories, experiences, and perceptions of the diverse peoples
of the American West.
Collections Associate
This is a full time, benefit-eligible, non-exempt position which will
last through completion of the Southwest Museum Collection Preservation
project and transition into further Collections rehousing initiatives
through 2013/early 2014.
The Collections Associate will work to re-house a variety of objects in
custom archival storage containers. Tasks include, but are limited to:
cleaning and condition reporting objects in the permanent collection,
consulting with the Senior Collections Management Technician regarding
best methods for creating storage mounts using archival materials, and
constructing storage mounts and containers for permanent collection
objects. The position will also involve the preparation, packing, and
assisting with moving rehoused objects to offsite storage.
The Associate assists in recording the location and movement of objects,
monitors related procedures, and organizes the physical inventory of
collections. He/she is responsible for the arrangement and well-being of
items in the Collections Storage areas and as such, monitors for
conditions that may jeopardize collections.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related field, i.e. Museum Studies, History,
Anthropology, Conservation or Art/Art History
- One to three years related experience in registration methods in a
museum
- Demonstrated experience with packing a variety of 3-D objects
- Essentials skills include: the ability to work with tools to create
custom storage mounts and containers, the willingness to perform
repetitive tasks and strong creative problem-solving skills
- Current knowledge of Collections Management theory and practice
obtained through membership in professional organizations, practical
training, reading professional literature, and attendance of meetings,
seminars and workshops
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and have experience with
relational database management programs for museum collections.
Experience using MIMSY XG is highly desirable
- This position, on occasion, requires the ability to lift items
weighing up to 35 pounds and walking up to 10 feet before placing them.
Required upon occasion is lifting of objects weighing up to 100 pounds
and carrying them up to 100 feet with one or two other staff members.
The work involves moving objects in large containers and maneuvering
carts, dollies and pallet jacks within storage areas in preparation for
transit.
