1st VIDEOBRASIL OPEN STUDIO PRIZE
With significant shifts in focus and scope, reflected in a new name, the 17th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil opens enrolment for two different modalities of selection and prizes.
Starting with this edition, the Southern Panorama competitive exhibition will accept work of various natures: video, installation, performance, printed objects, and other artistic experiments produced from May 2009 onwards by visual artists born in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania.
Enrollment is open up until March 10, 2011. In the Festival, due September 2011, the works selected will compete for a money prize and eight artist residency prizes, granted in partnership with institutions in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
On the sidelines, the 1st Videobrasil Open Studio Prize will select young artists who live in São Paulo to create artwork in collaboration with others at the premises of Casa Tomada, a creation and interaction venue in São Paulo.
The works will be produced in the first half of 2011 and will comprise an exhibition within the Festival. Enrolment for the Prize will remain open until October 29, 2010.
The regulation with schedules, requirements, and criteria for each of the prizes can be found at www.videobrasil.org.br, as well as the entry forms. Questions should be sent to 17Festival@videobrasil.org.br.
The Festival is promoted by SESC São Paulo and Associação Cultural Videobrasil.
Associação Cultural Videobrasil: an international reference for contemporary art from the South
Associação Cultural Videobrasil is an institution geared towards the production and diffusion of information on contemporary art. The SESC_Videobrasil Festival has become established as an international reference for expressions of contemporary art from the South.
Since the beginning of the decade, also in partnership with SESC São Paulo, an organization that operates in the fields of culture and socio-educational leisure, Videobrasil has also been involved in the production of large contemporary art exhibitions in Brazil, such as Sophie Calle – Take care of yourself (São Paulo and Salvador, 2009), and the forthcoming Joseph Beyus - We are the revolution (São Paulo and Salvador, 2010).
Videobrasil is directed by Solange Farkas, a curator with an international career spanning twenty-five years. She has created the Videobrasil Festival and promoted a number of exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including the Pan-African Exhibition of Contemporary Art (Salvador, 2005); La Mirada Discreta: Marcel Odenbach & Robert Cahen (Buenos Aires, 2006); and Suspensão e Fluidez (ARCO, Madri, 2007), by Eder Santos. She is also the curator of the Bahia Museum of Modern Art and a jury member for the Nam June Paik Award.
Also in partnership with SESC, Videobrasil maintains one of the most important video art collections in the Southern Hemisphere; an online data bank on contemporary art; a residency program; a series of documentaries about artists; and an annual publication on art. Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Gary Hill, Marina Abramovic, The Atlas Group, William Kentridge, Kendell Gears, Marcel Odenbach, Kenneth Anger, Coco Fusco and Peter Greenaway are among the artists featured in its exhibitions, publications, documentaries and festivals.
Starting in 2009, Videobrasil enhanced its strategy of linking the promotion of large contemporary exhibitions to educational programs devised to potentialize the audience's experience of artwork.
SESC_Videobrasil Festival
The first edition of Videobrasil was held in 1983, bringing together a trailblazing generation of national artists and documentary and video makers. In the years that ensued, the competitive exhibition turned to mapping electronic art from the geopolitical South of the globe, and accompanied the fast-paced evolution of electronic media as they became part of contemporary production.
From 1992 onwards, SESC_Videobrasil Festival became consolidated as an international reference for southern art and a privileged vantage point for observing contemporary production. Associação Cultural Videobrasil was created in 1991 to expand the event's objectives with lasting actions, such as publications and documentaries.
In the 2000-2009 decade the International Electronic Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil established its curatorial character. Beginning with the 13th edition, the programme was divided into thematic sections derived from observation of contemporary issues and trends, such as Performance (2005) and Moving image and lots of strangeness (2007).
Starting in 2007, strategic partnerships with teaching and research institutions based in Brazil and in foreign countries allowed Videobrasil to grant residency prizes to artists selected for the Southern Panorama competitive exhibition.
The 17th International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil will be held in September and October 2011. Aligned with the nature of contemporary artistic practices, the new competitive exhibition expands its ability to soak in diverse manifestations, such as video, installations, performances, book-objects, and other artistic experiments.
