Changing Art Sculpture Program Request for Proposals
The City of Ojai is looking for artists to submit proposals for the Changing
Sculpture site at the Ojai Arcade Plaza. Previous artists who have been
featured include Bret Price, Bill McEwen, Bob Privett, Christopher Lee,
Michael Pedziwiatr, and Ahde Lahti/Douglas Bungert. This program has brought
valuable exposure for the artists and is a great opportunity for the public
to view a variety of sculpture. The City invites all local and regional
artists to submit their work to be considered for this annual program, which
runs from June 2009 to May 2010.
In general, the base support for a three-dimensional work will accommodate a
piece weighing no more than 700 pounds with a maximum height of 10-12 feet
and a maximum width of 5 feet. Installation and de-installation of the piece
will be assisted by City Public Works staff. A stipend of $600 is paid to
the artist. Because this is a public space, the sculpture should be one
that poses no safety problems such as jagged edges or delicate material that
can be easily broken. The artwork should securely affix to the hardware
provided at the base support. The City has general liability insurance that
will cover the artwork over the yearlong period.
Please submit digital images of existing pieces, or proposals substantiated
by past work, and a resume´ to Kathy McCann, Redevelopment Manager at
mccann@ci.ojai.ca.us
, by Monday, May 18, 2009. Please include the dimensions and weight of the
proposed artwork, insurance value, the amount of time and type of assistance
required for installation, including estimated costs. Also, please provide
your complete information: name, address, telephone and email. Your name and
information will be included in our public art files when other
opportunities for art arise.
For a copy of the changing art exhibition guidelines, a drawing of the
locking mechanism, and a photograph of the site and the latest press
release, please see the link on the City of Ojai¹s website at
www.ci.ojai.ca.us. A selection will be made by the Arts Commission at their
June 2009 meeting. The artwork will be installed as early as is feasible
after this process. For more information, please contact Kathy McCann at
(805) 646-5581 (ext.111), Monday through Wednesday or e-mail her at
mccann@ci.ojai.ca.us. Information is also available through me at (805)
