Warm greetings from the Harpo Foundation!

http://www.harpofoundation.org/

I write today with an abundance of news after many months of planning that the board and I have embarked on since the death of our foundation’s founding artist and benefactor, Ed Levine, in January 2020.
We are in a process of shifting from a simple grantmaking foundation to one that also operates an artist residency program, and stewards Ed Levine’s studio, archive, and installed site-specific sculptures on a 10-acre property in the Vermont woods.
Ed Levine described the foundation “not as a philanthropic endeavor but as a way to return gifts of assistance provided to me.”
In keeping with this vision and inspiration, Harpo Foundation seeks to affirm the centrality of the artist in the world of art, support artists who fall outside institutional networks, and extend the experience of art and art making. Advancing this vision has been incredibly rewarding, and a most welcome tonic to a tragic and difficult year.
Please read on to learn about plans we are laying for a new residency program in Vermont called Back River Road Residency. See our outstanding 2020 grant recipients. Make note of the 2021 grant deadlines as well as program changes. And, check out and help us circulate a job posting for a newly created Program Manager position.
Everyday I am grateful to do this work. Thank you.
Julie Deamer
Executive Director
Back River Road Residency
Harpo Foundation has received a generous bequest from artist Ed Levine, including the artist’s former home and studio in South Royalton, Vermont.
It was Ed Levine’s vision to turn this 10-acre property into an artist residency program to provide an opportunity for artists to find inspiration, as he did, in Vermont’s rural landscape. Plans are underway to open Back River Road Residency in 2022 on this property. The program will host two residencies each summer and arrange for tours of Ed Levine’s site-specific sculptures.
Job Opening - Program Manager

I am thrilled to announce plans to hire a Program Manager. This position has been created at a critical juncture for the Foundation as we look to reaffirm the foundation’s purpose and advance Ed Levine’s vision to support visual artists who are under recognized by the field.

The ideal candidate will be inspired by the mission of the foundation and an experienced art professional with a demonstrated interest in, knowledge of and passion for contemporary visual art.

Endowed Fellowships
Since 2011, the foundation has awarded two residency fellowships to Native American visual artists at the Vermont Studio Center to support the development of visual artists and the potential for inter-cultural dialog.

In 2020, in accordance with Ed Levine’s bequest, this program is now endowed as the Harpo Foundation Native American Residency at Vermont Studio Center and will provide two full residency fellowships each year in perpetuity.

A third fellowship opportunity called Harpo Foundation Endowment at Vermont Studio Center will provide one full residency fellowship to an artist or writer each year in perpetuity.

Emerging Artist Fellowship
Since 2013, the Emerging Artist Fellowship program has awarded a unique opportunity for emerging artists to pursue creative projects without interruption at the Santa Fe Art Institute. Now, however, as the foundation develops plans for future programs, we regret to announce that this program has been suspended indefinitely.

It has been an honor to support the talented artists who received an Emerging Artist Fellowship and we have enjoyed a great partnership with the Santa Fe Art Institute. The foundation looks forward to announcing new programs to reaffirm the foundation’s commitment to artist residency fellowship programs in the near future.
The Harpo Foundation was established in 2006 by artist Ed Levine to support emerging and under recognized visual artists. Through grants and residency programs, the foundation seeks to stimulate creative inquiry and encourage new modes of making and thinking about art.
