LA Commons Call for Visual Artist

MacArthur Park LA Commons is searching for a Lead Artist to work with a core Youth Arts Team (Age 15-25) to collect neighborhood stories and to create temporary work of visual art that shares the stories.

In the past, art exhibitions have been installed for 3-6months in MacArthur Park. Youth Arts team members will also be paid a stipend for their work. LA Commons will coordinate project partners, supply acquisition, workshop space and recruiting the Youth Arts team. One lead artist will be hired to work with the team.

Project Partners: LA Commons, CARECEN, Mama’s Hot Tamales, Miguel Contreras HS, ReDiscover MacArthur Park Coalition, Peoples University of Law, and the Office of LA City Council Member Ed Reyes.

The Role the Lead Artist/Designer in this project will be:
To participate in story/image gathering process and events with the group to inform the designs for the prints
To mentor the Core Youth Arts team
to foster youth in the development of skills in image making and designs adding to visual identity for MacArthur Park
To create the overall project design that incorporates the youth artwork and successfully complete the design approval and installation process.

Timeline
July - Story and Image gathering and Design
August/September – finalize designs and complete approval process
October- art making
November -Installation
December - Opening Event Artist

Qualifications
Experience in visual arts and public art
Experience working with youth and community
Familiarity and experience with MacArthur Park Neighborhood

Compensation
$2000 stipend for lead artist
$200 design fee
