Department of Cultural Affairs Accepting Individual Artist Grant

DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS NOW ACCEPTING 2007-08 INDIVIDUAL ARTIST GRANT APPLICATIONS

Los Angeles: The Department of Cultural Affairs' (DCA) Cultural Grants Program is now accepting individual artists 2007-08 grant applications. Printed applications are available at DCA hosted workshops (listed below), City of Los Angeles Public Library branches, Council District Offices and Field Offices, and DCA Community Art Centers. Applications will also be available on the DCA website, www.culturela.org after September 15, 2006.

DCA currently gives grants to individual artists through two available programs: the City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Fellowships and Artist-In-Residence (AIR). Both award $10,000; C.O.L.A. supports solo work by mid-career artists and AIR supports community-based participatory art projects. Proposed projects must occur between July 2007 and June 2008.

The C.O.L.A. Fellowships are awarded to honor a spectrum of the City's most creative artists who dedicate themselves to an ongoing body of excellent work, represent a relevant progression through their pieces or series, exemplify a generation of core ideas in their field, garner respect from their peers, and serve as role models for other artists. Since 1990, the DCA has awarded over 115 fellowships to outstanding mid-career artists for the conception, creation, and production of new works.

The AIR grants are awarded to honor artists who demonstrate their ability to be a resource to the community by providing direct and intimate access to creative ideas and innovative services, and developing and implementing quality arts programming. Grantees offer three or more years of relevant experience and propose projects to be held in public venues within the City of Los Angeles with the purpose of enabling participants to understand the art form involved and to develop their own creativity through that art form.

The postmark deadline for C.O.L.A. Fellowship proposals is October 27, 2006. The postmark deadline for the AIR program is October 20,
2006. Artists who meet the requirements may apply for both programs.

The DCA Cultural Grant Program was formed in 1981 as a response to the overwhelming need to support Los Angeles organizations and artists as key catalysts in the synergy of our society. DCA's granting process is community driven, and local art experts, educators, and community agents serve as peer panelists for the review of applications. The makeup of these panels changes each year to ensure a fair and broad-minded selection of proposals.

The goal of the Department of Cultural Affairs is to enhance the quality of life for Los Angeles' 3.8 million residents and 24.3 million annual visitors. We succeed by providing programming and
creating partnerships to generate and support high quality arts and cultural experiences. The Department assures access to these experiences through a vibrant network of Grants, Marketing, Public and Community Art programs, and by building relationships with artists and art and cultural organizations in every community in Los
Angeles.
