In collaboration with Printed Matter's NY Art Book Fair, the Art Libraries Society of New York (ARLIS/NY) announces a conference on contemporary artists' books. The program will include speakers, panels, artists' presentations, and receptions. The conference focuses on recent developments in artists' books. Sessions this year focus on zines, data-oriented artists' books, reprints, print on demand, and criticism. These and other themes are intended to encourage dialog amongst scholars, collectors, artists, and librarians.

Photographers invited to submit photos of human development (deadline October 1)

Photographers from all over the world can now submit photos to a campaign intended to raise awareness of the many successes of the development process. The campaign intends to counterbalance the frequently shown images of desolation and despair, and is accepting submissions until October 1.

THe United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Global Photography Campaign will feature a permanent photo gallery at the International Policy Center for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG) office in Brazil and open for public visitation. Series of photo exhibitions will also be organized in several cities around the world.

Anyone can contribute a photograph: professional and non-professional photographers, students, civil society activists, government officials, UN staff members and so forth.

Short films competition invites submissions - Ecuador (deadline September 15)

An international film festival, "People's Awards," organized and sponsored by Ecuador's Fundación Octaedro, will award the best short "artistic or alternative" film worldwide. Deadline for submissions: September 15.

The event aims to promote artistic or alternative films that contribute to the knowledge of world cinematography. The 2009 competition will award a cash prize of US$1,000 and a trophy to the best short film. There will also be special mentions for the best short film in each of the following categories: documentary, fiction, experimental, one minute (exact length must be one minute), animation and SMS.

The original format can be of any kind. Works must last 15 minutes, including credits, except in the "1 minute" catgory.

Registration costs US$35 per film.

Photo competition invites 'fresh' perspectives on Europe

European young journalists -- between 18 and 30 years old -- are encouraged to submit photos that give fresh viewpoints on European issues to the photo competition Snapshot: Europe! Deadline: August 15.

Categories include:

•Europe on the move. Migration, integration, stereotypes.
•European identity? Values, diversity and cultural dialogue.
•Europe tomorrow. Sustainable development, ecology, environment.
Winners will have their photos on display at an international art-exhibition in Brussels from September 17 to October 15. The competition is supported by the Assembly of European Regions (AER).

Jordan film festival calls for entries from around the world (deadline September 15)

Filmmakers from around the world can submit entries to the Jordan Short Film Festival 2009 (JSFF). The deadline for submissions is September 15.

Submitted films should aim to promote dialogue between civilizations as well as promote intercultural dialogue. Films should be subtitled in English if the original language is not English.

JSFF will take place November 10 to 14, and will simultaneously host workshops, discussion panels, competitions, and meetings with filmmakers.

Contest to award photos fostering Colombian heritage (deadline August 14)

Professional and amateur Colombian photographers can participate in a contest of photos related to Colombian heritage. Entrants must submit a set of between 10 to 20 photographs. The deadline for entries is August 14.

Photographs must be unpublished and reflect the current concept of cultural heritage, referring to a legacy and a heritage shared by individuals in the community, region or nation. Entrans must be Colombian nationals or foreigners who can show a minimum of five years of residence in Colombia.

Two prizes will be awarded: a US$5,000 prize and a second of US$2,500. Additionally, all winning photographs will be published in the Gazette of the and will be part of a public exhibition.
