Grants available for conflict photographers

The Aftermath Project offers a US$20,000 grant for conflict photographers to share their experiences and an additional US$5,000 honorarium for a fixer/translator who wants to tell a story about his or her own experience.

This year-long grant is for conflict photographers who want to pursue a project about the aftermath in their own lives of covering conflict. The subject can be approached in any way – portraits, landscapes, reportage, collaboration with a family of someone who has been killed, anything that explores the personal aftermath of covering war, whether that be PTSD, the aftermath of sexual assault, the aftermath of being wounded.

Deadline for submissions is Oct. 1.

Community Arts Journalism Challenge

The Knight Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) have organized this journalism challenge to initiate high-quality cultural coverage, new and innovative ideas and constructive criticism from individuals and organizations.

Any journalist can apply as long as their idea focuses on one of the following communities: Akron, OH, Charlotte, NC, Detroit, MI, Macon, GA, Miami, FL, Philadelphia, PA, St. Paul, MN or San Jose/Silicon Valley, CA.

First-round winners receive up to US$20,000 to develop an action plan, which should clearly describe their project and how it will impact arts journalism in one of the eight communities listed above.

Video, photography contest open [Africa]

Southern and East African photographers and video makers can participate in a contest.

The contest is organized by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in partnership with Gwanza Arts.

Photographers and video makers are invited to submit works on the theme of "Pimp My Combi," as a marker of vernacular aesthetics and cultural codes, as well as a vehicle defining both urban landscape and social space throughout Africa.

Bringing together for the first time photography, video and sound installations, Gwanza 2011 proposes to look at the combi (or minibus) as a marker of vernacular aesthetics and cultural codes, as well as a vehicle defining both urban landscape and social space throughout Africa.

Just a quick reminder - the Third Quarter 2011 Deadline for the ARC Grants
Program (Artists' Resource for Completion) is coming up on Tuesday, August
2, 2011 by 6pm.

ARC grants provide rapid, short-term assistance to individual artists
residing in Los Angeles County who wish to enhance work for a specific,
imminent opportunity that may significantly benefit their careers. Artists
in any discipline are eligible to apply. The applicant must already have
secured an invitation from an established arts organization to present the
proposed work. The start date must be scheduled for presentation within six
months of the application deadline: for the Third Quarter deadline, the
presentation start date must fall between September 13, 2011 and February 2,
2012.
