Photography contest on water conservation open

Photographers interested in water conservation issues can enter a contest.

Australia's savewater! awards are calling for amateur and professional photographers worldwide to share their photos about the importance of water and conserving it for the future.

Three awards will be presented; junior student (up to 12 years old), senior student (13 to 17 years old) and open.

Prizes include digital cameras and iPods, with selected images to be used in international water conservation campaigns.

video contest - up to age 25

Young people up to age 25 can participate in a video contest.

NPR's "My Big Idea to Change the World" contest is designed to give people ages 13 to 25 the chance to explain their original ideas powered by science, technology or math. Legal residents of the U.S. are eligible to participate.

Entrants will explain their idea in a video. The top 10 finalists will have their videos featured NPR's website, www.npr.org, and on NPR's Facebook page, "Joe's Big Idea."The first place winner will get personalized advice or commentary from a leader in their field of innovation, facilitated by NPR senior correspondent Joe Palca, on how to make their idea become a reality.

Urban Photographer of the Year contest open

Photojournalists and amateur photographers worldwide can participate in this contest.

CBRE is accepting submissions for its 2012 Urban Photographer of the Year Competition, "Cities at Work."

The Urban Photographer of the Year will be the person who, in the eyes of the judges, has best captured the life of a town or city at a given time of day.

While the photograph does not necessarily have to be taken at that specific time of day, it does need to look as though it was. For example, a photograph could capture London at 4 a.m., Lisbon at 2 p.m. or Dubai at 9 p.m. Participants can enter a photograph for each hour of the day, allowing a maximum of 24 submissions.

The first-place winner will receive a photo safari vacation that includes seven nights' accommodation.

Festival accepting student documentaries [South America]

Students in South America can submit work to this documentary festival in Curitiba, Brazil.

Les Impatientes is accepting submissions for its Festival Internacional do Documentário Estudantil (FIDÉ), which aims to promote student documentary production worldwide. FIDÉ has been held for four years in France and will come to Brazil in November for the first time. The specific date and location have yet to be determined.

Students enrolled in university or any other type of educational institution can submit work.

The festival, which is not a competitive event, showcases work that goes beyond the typical standard of traditional media. It aims to create a space for debate, exchange of experiences and cooperation between the public, students and professionals.

Mobile phone film contest open

The Association of Film Lokuos Films and the short cycle Va De Curt of Voilà-Cafè Teatre in Barcelona seek entries for Cinephone, a contest of short films made with mobile phones.

There is no limit on number of entries. Films must be shot with a mobile phone and applicants should include its make and model in each submission.

Consent is required for people and private locations appearing in film. Films must be original and unpublished.

The duration of the shorts must not exceed five minutes. Work submitted that is not in Spanish or Catalan must be subtitled.

The first-place prize includes EUR€300 (US$365) and a Samsung smartphone; the second-place prize is EUR€150 (US$180) and three hotel nights; the third-and fourth-place winners will receive EUR€50 (US$60).

Strength in Numbers photo contest open [Worldwide]

Photojournalists and amateur photographers worldwide can enter this contest.

Mini Space is accepting entries for its Strength in Numbers photography contest.

Each applicant should submit a photographic interpretation of the contest's theme--whether it be a magnificent swarm of starlings, an army of ants tackling a leaf, the stunning synchronicity of a dance troupe or the orchestral swirl of a cluster of stars in the evening sky.

The first-place winner will receive a MacBook Air; the second-place winner will receive an new iPad 16GB; and the third-place winner will receive an iPhone 4S 16GB. The popular vote winner will receive a Diana Camera Deluxe Kit.

Latin America -- Photo contest promotes girls' rights

Professional photographers in Latin America can participate in this contest.

Organized by the Plan International and news agency EFE, the competition invites photographers to submit their work to the photography contest and exhibit "Because I am a Girl." Submissions should address the exclusion of girls in Latin America and highlight and how they live day-to-day.

The pictures must depict girls in one of the 13 countries where Plan International is active: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Peru.

The selected photos may be displayed at various commercial centers and other locations in the participating countries on Oct. 11, in celebration of the International Day of the Girl.
