College of the Atlantic seeks to honor the legacy of Allan Stone by establishing a Chair in Visual Arts in his name. Stone, the New York art dealer and collector and Mount Desert Island summer resident, combined a broad expertise in abstract expressionism, found objects, and realist painting. College of the Atlantic seeks a full time faculty member to serve as the Allan Stone Chair in Visual Arts to teach Art History and Studio Art courses. Candidates will only be considered if they have experience in both of these areas. Candidates must have experience in teaching the History of Art within a broad cultural and interdisciplinary context, and in addition, have experience teaching studio art (such as photography, media arts, sculpture, painting, or drawing). This position entails teaching five undergraduate courses a year, overseeing independent studies, and supervising senior projects. The successful candidate will be expected to provide academic leadership and play a central role in defining the future direction of art history within the college’s curriculum, and offer courses that connect to other areas of our interdisciplinary curriculum. This position includes the responsibility for academic coordination of a small on-campus gallery during the academic year. All COA faculty collaborate in democratic governance, committee work, and crafting a shared vision of Human Ecological education. A terminal degree in an appropriate field is strongly preferred.
