Eye Filmmuseum is a leading international film heritage institution based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and exploring film and the art of the moving image. Eye serves as a custodian, guide, and pioneer in the world of film, celebrating the power and diversity of cinematic experiences. With a unique collection of over 55,000 films, Eye presents film programs and exhibitions that showcase works from cinema’s earliest beginnings to contemporary films and VR. The museum also collaborates with the film industry to promote Dutch cinema abroad and offers educational programs to foster a love for film.
Eye Filmmuseum is now hiring a Head of Exhibitions for 36 hours per week (1.0 FTE).
Department of Exhibitions
Since 2012, Eye has developed a renowned international exhibition program at the crossroads of film and visual art. The museum features 1,300 square meters of exhibition space and a considerable structural exhibition budget, hosting three to four exhibitions annually. Since 2015, Eye has also presented the prestigious international Eye Art & Film Prize.
As the Head of Exhibitions, you will spearhead Eye’s exhibition policy, leading a team of three project managers along with various contractors. Collaboration is key; you will work closely with guest curators and dedicated colleagues from the Film Programming & Distribution, Curatorial, Education, and Marketing & Communications departments, as well as the general director.
Tasks and responsibilities
–Develop and implement Eye’s exhibition policy in collaboration with the team and the general director, in line with the 2025–2028 policy plan.
–Lead a team of three project managers and coordinate multiple contractors (with a variable team of 60–100 people working on each exhibition).
–Inspire the team and stay informed about artistic developments and social trends, including sustainability and diversity.
–Implement and oversee the exhibitions, ensuring quality and budget adherence.
–Develop a vision and secure funding for publications related to the exhibitions.
–Initiate new partnerships with funding organizations and international collaborators.
–Represent and communicate Eye’s artistic vision on art and film, both internally and externally.
Candidate profile
–Experienced curator with a strong background in film and visual arts.
–Proven ability to create engaging moving-image exhibitions.
–Extensive international network of professionals in the fields of art and film.
–Skilled in empathetic leadership and team management.
–Characteristics: enthusiastic, open-minded, curious, innovative, entrepreneurial and decisive.
–Proficient in Dutch or willing to learn.
