The Department of Visual Arts and Art History, School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream position in Studio Arts (Painting). This is a Contractually Limited Appointment (CLA) to the teaching stream for a two-year term to commence July 1, 2024.

York University’s Department of Visual Arts and Art History is one of the leaders in art history and art practice in Canada. We are committed to teaching critical issues in art and art history, and to the ongoing development of programs in all areas of studio and studies.

Applicants should clearly articulate their experience in contemporary painting practices including but not limited to digital techniques and processes; figurative painting; painting installation, among others if applicable.

Candidates qualified to teach in a secondary studio area, such as print media (lithograph, silk screen, etc.) and/or drawing are encouraged to apply. The Department of Visual Art and Art History encourages applications from candidates who bring experience in facilitating equity, diversity, and inclusion practices within their artistic or creative practice and teaching.

We seek a colleague who will enhance York’s studio program by developing and delivering curriculum that has a digital presence and through socially engaged artistic or creative practice and inclusive teaching practices. The position includes graduate supervision, TA supervision, and undergraduate instruction for majors and non-majors in studio. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of innovative pedagogies in studio art courses that engage both in-class and online instruction. They will join collaborative and committed peers who share administrative duties and responsibilities such as departmental governance and committee work. A minimum of two years post-secondary teaching is required. Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies is required as the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.

Candidate Qualifications:

• Degree: PhD or PhD equivalent (e.g. MA/MFA with a substantial record of professional experience in Studio/Visual Art) is required.

• Scholarship:

o A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field of visual arts through creative or artistic contributions (publications, exhibitions, awards, accolades, etc.)

• Teaching:

o A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students (e.g., teaching statement; teaching evaluations; and evidence of teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning).

o Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.
