Spike Island in Bristol is looking to appoint a new Director and Deputy Director to lead the organisation from April 2024 onwards.

After successfully leading the organisation for the past five years, our current Director, Robert Leckie, and Deputy Director, Aidan Woodburn, are both moving on to new challenges.

The organisation has a dedicated team and Board, a unique business model, and a dynamic artistic programme. It also has a growing audience, good relationships with artists, national partners, and local communities, and is in a strong financial position.

The new Director and Deputy Director will be expected to work together closely to define and deliver a new vision for the sustainable development of Spike Island and its community of artists and creative businesses.

We are looking for people with the energy, experience and commitment to excel in these positions.

The Director needs to bring a strong artistic vision and demonstrable experience of the managerial and operational demands of a role at this level, as well as a passion for contemporary art and organisational development.

The Deputy Director will lead on the administrative, legal, commercial, operational and financial management of Spike Island. They will be expected to oversee and further develop our capital development plans, organisational policies and procedures, and income generation and fundraising strategies.

These are exceptional opportunities for the right candidates to bring bold new ideas that can further enhance Spike Island’s outstanding reputation as a dynamic centre for the research, production and presentation of contemporary art.

Spike Island is a Disability Confident Committed employer, who values equity, diversity and inclusion, and is committed to anti-racism and to addressing inequality in the arts sector. We strongly encourage applications from people who identify as D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent, come from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds and/or people of the Global Majority.

Please note that candidates must be based in, or willing to relocate to, Bristol.
