Established in 2017 by Hyundai Motor Company, the Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech is an annual award program that aims to inspire emerging Chinese curators working in art and technology. On April 27, 2022, the Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech announced the theme “Decentralized Reworlding” for its sixth instalment.

“In a bold new initiative, the Hyundai Blue Prize will continue to encourage the investigation of the complexity of the social system and the rethinking of the current boundaries of our social norms and human territories,” said DooEun Choi, Art Director of Hyundai Motor. “The Hyundai Blue Prize 2023 will nurture the creative and critical forms of re-worlding through the arts, technology, and humanities that must be in action to sustain our decentralized life.”

The Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech expands boundaries by inviting senior and junior juries in various fields, audiences and media industry representatives in the judging process to open new conversations. Five shortlisted curators will be selected from an open call and nomination process. The deadline for applications is July 12, 2022.

In order to support the five shortlisted curators in their innovative research and practice, senior jury members will conduct one-on-one mentoring sessions. The 2023 senior jury members are Joel Ferree (Program Director of Art & Technology Lab, Los Angeles County Museum of Art), FEI Jun (Professor, Doctoral supervisor, Art + Technology program, School of Design, Central Academy of Fine Arts), HOU Hanru (Writer and Curator, Artistic Director of MAXXI), Christiane Paul (Adjunct Curator of Digital Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art), and Stephanie Rosenthal (Director of the Martin Gropius Museum). Each of the shortlisted curators will receive a 30,000 CNY cash prize and participate in a series of international exchange events that will allow them to develop their initial proposals in more depth. A grant of 600,000 RMB will be offered to the two final awardees to realize their selected proposals at Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing.

The Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech aims to provide an international platform for participants to cultivate emerging curators through exchange, research, observation, and discussion and support artists' unlimited potential. Hyundai Blue Prize Art+Tech enhances its communication by launching an integrated official website with the Hyundai Blue Prize Design. The website provides detailed submission instructions and serves as a digital archive of previous projects.
