Two new residency programmes have been launched at E-WERK Luckenwalde for artists, innovators, activists, scientists and creative practitioners to address topics including sustainable transformation, climate activism and the material revolution in collaboration with E.ON Stiftung and Akademie der Kunst.

VISIT Residency Programme in collaboration with E.ON Stiftung and Akademie der Künste (deadline: May 16, 2022)
E-WERK, Akademie der Künste and E.ON Stiftung are delighted to offer four artists a 20,000 EUR grant and fully supported residency at E-WERK and Akademie der Künste to be realised within a period of six months. The open call has two main categories; energy and its relevance to society and artificial intelligence.

The artists selected in 2022 have the opportunity to stay as a guest with studio space at E-WERK Luckenwalde. In addition artists will be invited to develop a joint exhibition and public programme.

The scholarship holders will be selected by: Inke Arns (Director Hartware Median KunstVerein, Dortmund), Anna Fricke (Curator Museum Folkwang, Essen), Helen Turner (Artistic Director and Curator, E-WERK Luckenwalde), Johannes Odenthal (Director Programming Akademie der Künste, Berlin), Harald Welzer (sociologist, Director Stiftung FuturZwei), Siegfried Zielinski (Professor for Media Theory, Archaeology and Variantology of the Media at the Universität der Künste Berlin).

Fellowship for cross-disciplinary thinkers to promote social change (deadline: May 15, 2022)
A new fellowship programme from the E.ON Stiftung in partnership with E-WERK Luckenwalde, aimed at researchers, scientists, and activists, seeks to develop a fresh body of knowledge about the needs and impact of the sustainable transformation towards climate neutrality.

The interdisciplinary team will be based at E-WERK Luckenwalde, Brandenburg and will be invited to investigate how society—and the people who act and operate within its bounds—will change during the journey towards achieving climate neutrality. Fellows can pick from one of seven fields of research. These range from the future of personal transport in the context of local requirements to the impact of the responsible and flexible handling of energy resources on a day-to-day level, and the value of data in light of the continued advance of digital processes. The interplay between climate action and security will also be investigated.

Each Fellow will be provided with a monthly grant of 1,300 EUR for the duration of this nine-month programme. The programme also contributes towards covering a portion of research costs. Prospective Fellows can apply here.

About E-WERK Luckenwalde
E-WERK Luckenwalde is located in a former coal power station built in 1913, ceasing production in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin wall. Located 30 minutes south of Berlin, E-WERK Luckenwalde is jointly directed by artist Pablo Wendel and curator Helen Turner. In 2017, the art collective Performance Electrics gGmbH led by Pablo Wendel acquired the former brown-coal power station with the vision to reanimate it as a sustainable Kunststrom (art power) Kraftwerk to feed power into the national grid by burning locally sourced waste wood chips to make electricity, and function as a large scale contemporary art centre. As part of POWER NIGHT in 2019, Performance Electrics gGmbH formally switched the power of the former factory back on.

A recipient of direct funding from E.ON SE, E.ON Stiftung operates as an independent organisation, supporting and organising projects in relation to energy and society. One of the Foundation’s key aims is to rethink the transformation to a climate-neutral society as part of a broad-based, networked, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach. A central role is played here by the collection, processing and analysis of data on the opinions and preferences regarding social change as expressed by ordinary citizens. Another objective is establishing close cooperation between the Foundation and local partners as well as local event formats, which can be used by a wide range of actors and communities to discuss the needs and challenges of the energy and sustainability transition in projects and labs.
