Kunstraum is seeking a Managing Director to support our team on a part-time basis. We are a community for artists by artists and a gallery/curatorial platform with two co-working lofts of 2,000 ft. located at 20 Grand Avenue, a beautifully renovated factory building in Clinton Hill/Navy Yard. We offer short- and long-term studio space, artist residencies, studio visits by curators/gallerists, member promotion, and host curatorial exhibitions, as well as an annual members’ show.
As an interdisciplinary team of artists, curators, and architects, we seek to promote emerging art, as well as outstanding exhibition concepts featuring both established and emerging artists. Press coverage includes Communication Arts, Creator’s Project, Huffington Post, Artnet News, Interview Magazine, Art F City, and Artnet News. With Video Shop at NADA New York, Kunstraum won the Artfair Goers Award of Artspace for the best booth, and consecutively also participated in Untitled, Miami.
The main responsibilities of the Managing Director are:
- Communication and admin support for 19 artist members and invited curators
- Studio listings, viewing appointments, on-boarding, paperwork, studio visits, newsletter
- Promotion for members and exhibitions via ongoing social media posts and website
- Admin and production support on exhibitions and art projects
- Promote and facilitate grant writing, photography, and promotional services for artists
- Overseeing the biweekly cleaning professional, additional maintenance e.g., weekly trash
- Check mail, purchase supplies
- Manage gallery receptions facilitate sales
- Develop procedures, guidelines, rules, and optimize handbooks
- Select and invite curators to the studio visit program from the personal network
The person taking the position will have the opportunity to grow with the company as we are currently expanding its offerings, improving administrative structures, and consolidating our curatorial program. Lots of communication and admin work can be done remotely and via email.
What we are looking for:
Degree in Art History, Arts Administration, or related field.
Responsible, mature, reliable, highly detail-oriented, efficient, work independently.
3-5 years of experience in administrative work and/or management for arts organizations, event management, or cultural programming experience.
Communications expert, copyediting and grant writing experience, humor, wit, networker.
Experience in working with artists and knowledge of the New York Artworld and press.
Hands-on, help to maintain lofts and the gallery, organize, keep things smooth.
Sharp, strategic, creative thinker, ambitious.
Hours: Part-time, 10-20 hrs per week (standard 10 hours, >50% from home)
Compensation: Intermediate-level freelance basis, commission on art sales, and new member acquisitions
Commitment: One-year minimum, must have continuous-time for this job, available to come to the location 2-3 times per week (20 Grand Avenue, close by Pratt + Navy Yard)
