Residency Program
Call for Proposals
Deadline: February 5, 2020 (11:59PM EST)

The Wendy’s Subway Residency Program supports a variety of projects at the intersection of literature, the arts, and publishing. This stipended residency provides artists, writers, independent publishers, and small-scale arts organizations with focused time to research, experiment, and develop creative projects, public programs, and publications over two to three months.

Residents receive a $600 stipend as well as an additional stipend of $1,000 for public programs, and further resources for a publication to be determined in relation to each resident’s project.

Residents become key-holders at Wendy’s Subway during the course of their residency with 24/7 access to the library and workspace. Beyond this time, residents receive yearlong Supporter-level membership to Wendy’s Subway.

Residents are invited to develop projects which can manifest through three key areas of Wendy’s Subway programming. These include:
• Exhibiting a special collection of printed matter and producing creative interventions in the reading room. The collection on display is acquired by Wendy’s Subway as part of the Residency Archive.
• Developing 2-3 public programs, including talks, workshops, screenings, performances, and more.
• Producing a publication with Wendy’s Subway during the residency period or in the following months. Past publications have taken the form of annotated bibliographies, quick zines, edited transcripts stemming from public programs, commissioned reflections, and ephemera and research undertaken over the course of the residency. Each publication is printed in an edition of 150-300 copies and distributed by Wendy’s Subway.
Residents receive creative, technical, and administrative support from Wendy’s Subway staff to realize a program of public events, as well as editorial, design, and production support for a publication related to their proposed project. The unique format of the Residency Program provides resources for focused study, research, and creative work, as well as a platform for projects that seek to expand the social impact of the resident’s work through audience engagement.

We privilege projects which relate to Wendy’s Subway’s mission to continuously seek new modes of accessing and creating knowledge around and through the library collection, engage readers and audiences in innovative ways, and invest in the capacity of books to create networks of support, resource-sharing, and solidarity through publication and distribution. We ascribe to the idea that publishing is a practice of social assembly with the capacity to advance social change.

Wendy’s Subway is a nonprofit library, writing space, and independent publisher located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Since 2013, Wendy’s Subway has provided a versatile platform for expanding modes of reading, writing, and publishing. Our interdisciplinary program includes free readings, talks, performances, and reading groups; writing workshops and master classes; the annual, yearlong series The Quick and the Dead, which highlights the life, work, and legacy of a deceased writer by bridging their work to that of contemporary practitioners; and a unique residency program designed to support other organizations, small publishers, and collective artists’ projects. In 2016, Wendy’s Subway launched a multifaceted publishing initiative including artists’ books, hybrid-genre, and poetry publications by emerging writers, artists, and performers. Our noncirculating library holds a collection of over 3,000 titles, with a specific focus on art, literature, and critical theory, available to readers during public library hours. Wendy’s Subway is dedicated to encouraging creative, critical, and discursive engagement with arts and literature with the belief that collaborative practice and equitable access to reading are catalysts for social transformation.
