The School of Film, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of a full-time, tenure eligible, Assistant Professor of Acting, beginning fall 2020. We seek a teacher of acting who will work with students on: developing agency and authenticity about their body of work and careers; building a strong sense of self and self-care as well as compassion and understanding of others as resources for their craft and a whole person approach to making work; building inclusive practices in their own performance work and contributions to making work in multiple locations; cultivating rigor and excellence in their pursuit of authenticity and versatility; practicing as generous collaborators and visionary leaders in a variety of spaces and contexts. The ideal candidate will seek to be a part of the ASU community that is identified "not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed" as framed in our charter and have a record of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in their work. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have fluency with current modes of performance training and culturally responsive acting pedagogies, as well as experience working on projects that resonate with culturally specific communities and voices and a strong level of engagement with contemporary theatre/performance on stage, screen and in digital media.

About the School of Film, Dance and Theatre
The School of Film, Dance and Theatre is committed to investigating and situating the importance of disciplinary knowledge and artistic practices from film, dance and theatre as central to citizenship, democracy and our social wellbeing; to advancing practices within and across each discipline; and to researching and developing innovative and relevant pedagogical and curricular approaches that center equity. With over 650 film majors, over 250 undergraduate theatre majors, 100 undergraduate dance majors and over 50 MA, MFA and PhD students, the School of Film, Dance and Theatre is a dynamic teaching, learning and discovery environment in which production and curriculum are mutually supportive. Each year we present an extensive season of productions that push the boundaries of contemporary theatre and dance and an annual student film festival that highlights the best emerging talent in digital film and media production. Our programming features hundreds of live events and presentation of student films; these works engage over 20,000 community members in the metro Phoenix area. School initiatives include the Performance in the Borderlands series of lectures, workshops, performances and public discussions and Film Spark, which connects students to the Los Angeles entertainment industry through courses, workshops, mixers and collaborating with the Hollywood Invades Tempe student group to bring top filmmakers for screenings and Q&As. Cross Institute initiatives include the Urban Sol collaboration of Valley area DJs, MCs, graffiti artists and dancers and ArtsWork, an initiative that unites artists and scholars with community leaders in research and programs focused on children and the arts.
Our theatre faculty is comprised of artists, practitioners, and scholars committed to delivering a curriculum that highly values theatre that addresses social and political issues and places emphasis on emerging voices. The Assistant Professor of Acting will work to advance the mission of the Theatre Program within the School of Film, Dance and Theatre to increase and diversify the student population. The candidate will leverage their knowledge and skills in working with and assisting first-generation students for graduation in preparation to transform their fields and society. The candidate will be expected to facilitate the vision and voice of our students and their success through active mentorship and innovative new learning experiences that prioritize access, inclusion, diversity and excellence in alignment with ASU and its charter and the Herberger Institute’s mission to amplify the projection of all voices.

Principle duties for the Assistant Professor of Acting include teaching, mentoring, and advising students in the acting concentrations at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, the candidate hired will be expected to work collaboratively across the School of Film, Dance and Theatre to impact the breadth and depth of new course offerings for major and non-major students in both in-person and online learning environments. This hire will supervise and mentor student projects, including senior thesis research, projects for stage and screen, and student actors in a range of works and contexts. This faculty member is expected to maintain or develop a national profile as a professional artist and/or scholar who is able to connect classroom experiences to professional practice. In addition to teaching and creative work, active participation in shared faculty governance and service within the School, Institute, and University is expected.

Required Qualifications:
• MFA or Ph.D. in Acting, Theatre, or a performing arts related field of study.
• Minimum of three years of teaching theatre and performance (live, mediated, and/or for the screen) in higher education or professional settings with course offerings.
• Minimum of three years of professional performance experience in live and/or mediated forms.
• Demonstrated ability to foster the educational and cultural needs of students to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in the field.
• Demonstrated pedagogical excellence and innovation in the teaching of acting, theatre, and/or performance.

Desired Qualifications:
• National record of creative activity in, or publications on, acting, theatre, film/media or performance practices
• Ability to design and implement curriculum and programs in Theatre, Film and Dance, both online and in-person courses, and collaborate in working across the disciplines that comprise the five schools in the Herberger Institute.
• Expertise and/or certification in voice, movement, and/or performance techniques
