What is the BTP 2019 open call?
This open call invites artists working in all mediums to submit proposals for artwork inclusion in By the People 2019 to be presented June 15-23, 2019 in Washington, DC.
What is By the People?
By the People is a city-wide international arts and dialogue festival in Washington, DC presented by Halcyon, which supports innovative emerging creatives through fellowships in art and social entrepreneurship. The inaugural 2018 festival presented free and accessible art and performance to over a dozen venues in all four quadrants of Washington, DC. The festival’s more than 100 events included performances, art installations, and curated conversations about what it means to seek life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. By the People 2019 will be curated by Jessica Stafford Davis, founder of The Agora Culture a national online multicultural arts platform that supports emerging artists of color and collectors through educational programming, art salons, and its annual Art On the Vine exhibition in Martha’s Vineyard.
Curatorial Theme
By the People 2019 will focus on critical work by artists exploring issues marginalized communities currently face within the United States. The work will investigate questions of equality and fairness and will highlight the difficulties and experiences of those who struggle to have a voice. Through film, video, installation and sculpture, the artists will draw inspiration from various historical and contemporary sources to offer new perspectives and alternate narratives that complicate fact and memory. These innovative artworks aim to compel audiences to hope for a more compassionate world and ultimately to work towards a more equitable future for all.
