The Jerome Foundation is delighted to announce that the 2017 Emerging Composer / Sound Artist Fellowship application is now open. This program supports self-designed fellowships to further the creative development of emerging composers and sound artists whose work is of exceptional artistic merit and / or promise. The deadline for application is January 26, 2017 by 4:30pm central standard time.
Five unrestricted fellowships of $20,000 will be awarded for a one-year fellowship period.
This fellowship is intended to support composers and sound artists who are creators of new music in any genre or style, including composers working outside traditional musical boundaries and conventions. This program is open to composers formally or informally trained and composers who use improvisation. Performing musicians and singer-songwriters or lyricists who do not compose are ineligible to apply.
Applicants must be continuous residents of Minnesota or the five boroughs of New York City for at least one year prior to application.
Individual composers and sound artists are eligible to apply. A composer or sound artist whose principal body of work has been created in collaboration is not able to apply as an individual unless there is a significant body of recent independent work. Work samples and resume should clearly support this.
Applicants must have completed their training, formal or informal, and be active professional artists.
Students in K-12 educational programs or enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are not eligible.
Fellowship funds may be used to cover a variety of needs such as living expenses, attendance at workshops and seminars, participation in residency programs, travel and equipment purchases necessary for creative work, hiring musicians or collaborators, rental of studio space, buying time from other employment to focus on music making, covering creative project development costs, and paying for childcare to make time for art making.
Applicants will be asked to provide a fellowship plan, an artist statement, résumé, work samples, and letters of reference.
A panel of four composer / sound artists, curators, presenters, and music professionals will review applications and select fellowship recipients. The panel will review the applications and recommend recipients to the Jerome Foundation Board of Directors, which approves all grants.
Grants will be announced by June 2017.
Applications are only accepted online. Applications are NOT accepted via email. Late applications will not be reviewed.
To apply online, create an online account with a login and password, complete the application form, provide the required attachments, and then submit. Applicants will receive email notification that the application was received.
