Launched by Ashkal Alwan in Beirut in 2011, the Home Workspace Program (HWP) is a 10-month program that enrolls 10–15 fellows per year. The program is open to artists and other practitioners from Lebanon and the world over, to develop their formal, technical and theoretical skills in a critical setting, and provides enrolled fellows with feedback and resources to facilitate and support their art practice. Each admitted fellow is granted a merit-based scholarship, access to studio space and HWP facilities. A public component is accessible to non-enrolled participants through lectures, seminars and workshops, which are free of charge.

HWP 2016–17 consists of four main elements:

–A three-week preface by Ali Cherri in collaboration with others, provides an introduction to the program and orients fellows to Lebanon’s urban and cultural geography through site visits and talks with invited guests.

–A course that runs weekly throughout the 10-month period is taught by Visiting Professors (VP) from a range of disciplines. The course is organized along four interconnected nodes:
The translation of forms, and the geometry and politics of the senses that make up seeing, listening, writing, moving; the making of art as cultural capital, the geopolitics of art pedagogies, and the philosophies that have informed the making of the artist, all comprise histories of the artist; the conditions, aesthetics and effects of data accumulation, robotics, digital imaging, and other realities as elaborated through technologies, life and future in the digital realm; and financialization as a current formation of capital, examining the manifold instruments, like liquidity, that channel the distribution of energies, materials and power.

–Four Resident Professors (RP) are invited for a set period each, alongside guests of their choice, to explore themes, media and forms with an affinity to their distinct artistic practices through workshops, seminars, and public lectures. The Resident Professors also participate in studio visits and engage in discussion with HWP fellows.
2016–17 Resident Professors are Cevdet Erek, Lina Majdalanie and Metahaven. The fourth RP will be announced shortly.

–Resident Artist Joe Namy is invited to accompany fellows for the duration of the program, and to conduct meetings, studio visits and group critiques.

Together, the course, workshops, seminars, public lectures, and critiques form an intense program in which fellows are supported in thinking about and developing their artistic trajectories and individual or collective practices.

HWP 2016–17 will run from October 3, 2016 till July 9, 2017.
