Headlands Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary, international arts center located in the Marin Headlands, and is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Headlands' artists programs provide opportunities for research, experimentation, professional development, and peer-to-peer exchange for artists working across disciplines at critical times in their careers. Unique among programs for artists, Headlands' dynamic residency program provides meaningful resources—time, space, community, and financial support—to artists who are working on the cutting-edge of their field to catalyze new modes of thought, work, and discourse. By bringing together artists from a wide range of disciplines—visual and interdisciplinary arts, architecture, performance and dance, music and sound, writing, curating, and art criticism—these programs emphasize a balance in developing an individual practice, a valuable exchange with other artists and visitors, and a meaningful engagement with place.
Artist in Residence
Fully sponsored residencies for local, national, and international artists in all disciplines
Application deadline: June 3, 2016
May–November, 2017
The Artist in Residence (AIR) program awards fully sponsored residencies to 45 local, national, and international artists each year. AIRs are at all stages in their careers and work in a diverse array of fields and media, including: painting, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, dance, sound and music, film, video, new media, writing, architecture, interdisciplinary arts, social practice, and arts professionals. Residencies of four to eight weeks include private studio space, chef-prepared meals, comfortable housing, and travel and living stipends.
Included in the AIR program are several discipline-specific awards with fully sponsored, six to eight week residencies and significant cash prizes, two of which are by open call: the Chamberlain Award supports artists working in the discipline of social practice, whose creative practice implements non-traditional media in order to contribute to conversations about society and the manifestation of change for individual lives and communities. The Chiaro Award recognizes an accomplished, mid-career painter residing in the United States, and fosters their ability to continue to produce exceptional and exemplary work in the medium of painting.
