Amsterdam Light Festival invites you (artists, designers, engineers and architects) to submit ideas for artworks to be staged at the festival's 2016–17 edition. The fifth edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival will take place in the city center of Amsterdam from end of November 2016 till January 2017. As one of the most successful light festivals we realize that we owe our success to you, the Artist. It is why The Guardian ranked us #1 of the top ten light festivals of Europe: because of our festival's "eclectic" character. Our unique way of selecting artworks is exactly what offers the audience this fantastic variety of Light Art: everyone can submit his or her idea, and everyone's concept is considered seriously.

Themes
For the first time the festival introduces two themes which both relate to one of each of the exhibition routes:

Water Colors, boat route: View on Amsterdam
We aspire to artworks that offer a new and unexpected view on Amsterdam, its history, its architecture, its relations and international role, as well as its future. Being a historic city that has always welcomed people from all backgrounds and from all over the world, Amsterdam is a densely populated capital that bubbles and buzzes with activity, thoughts and new ideas.

Illuminade, walking route: Biomimicry
Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature's patterns and strategies. The goal of Biomimicry is to create products, processes, and policies—and ultimately new ways of living—that are well-adapted to human life on Planet Earth over the long haul. We encourage artists to team up with scientists and (software) technologists, and submit as a multi-disciplinary team that addresses the theme of Biomimicry in a way that surprises, inspires, raises questions and engages viewers of all ages and all backgrounds.
