International Art Space (IAS) is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from Australian and Nordic artists working with visual, digital and hybrid media who are interested in participating in spaced 3: north by southeast, the third iteration of spaced, IAS's recurring international event of context-responsive art.

Spaced 3: north by southeast is centred on an artists' exchange between Nordic and Australian visual artists and communities, exploring the significant cultural, social and environmental parallels between the two regions. The program will span three years (2016–18) and comprise 12 residency-based projects and a final group exhibition. Residencies will take place in regional, remote and outer-urban locations in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Western Australia. Nordic artists will undertake their residencies in Western Australia, whilst Australian artists will hosted by Nordic partner organisations. These residencies are positioned as the means to develop new works that will be created in response to the social, environmental and historical contexts of the host communities.

Residencies will be organised and managed in collaboration with partner organisations located in or nearby to the host communities. Residencies will run for periods between ten weeks (minimum) and six months, and will be split into at least two parts: the first dedicated to research, the second to production. The work created through this process will be firstly presented in the host communities as a series of solo exhibitions/events, and subsequently brought together with works made by other spaced three artists in a large group exhibition to be presented in Perth, Western Australia and at least one Nordic institution in 2018. A scaled-down version of this group show will subsequently tour venues across Australia in 2019–20.

This core program will be complemented by an interactive online platform, a symposium, regional meetings between partners and participants, educational activities and a comprehensive post-event publication documenting and reflecting on the whole cycle of activities.

International Art Space is seeking to work with contemporary artists interested in creating context-responsive works that explore local issues by placing them in a global context. Artists will be offered remuneration package inclusive of an artist's fee, contribution to materials and production costs, travel allowance, accommodation, and on site staff support (part-time).

About
Spaced is a recurring event of Australian and international context-responsive art. Conceived and coordinated by International Art Space, spaced brings together international and Australian artists with communities to explore the relationship between globalisation and local identity.

Spaced focuses on artistic practices that:
–Engage with the fabric of everyday life and social relations
–Straddle the disciplinary boundaries of art, science and technology, social activism, design and architecture
–Result in works that are more than objects for contemplation or a means of individual self-expression, but represent a process of negotiation and consultation between artists and specific social groups
–Engage with current international trends focusing on participatory, dialogical, socially-engaged and context-responsive arts practice

International Art Space (IAS) is a Perth-based not-for-profit visual art organisation, formed in 1998 by farmers and arts professionals interested in exploring cultural identity through art. Three main principles direct all IAS' projects—namely, a commitment to experimenting with new modes of interaction between contemporary artists and communities; the promotion of a dialogue between regional, metropolitan and international realities; and the conviction that contemporary art should not be isolated in its specialist domain but participate in a cross-disciplinary dialogue involving a wide range of other cultural and social practices.

Since its inception, International Art Space has run more than 100 residency-based projects by artists from across 20 countries and organised four national Australian touring exhibitions.
