Gluon & Budafabriek invite artists to submit proposals for the development and production of new work in collaboration with LabMET, faculty of Bioscience Engineering at the University of Ghent. The result and the process of the collaboration will be integrated in the exhibition 'WATER.WAR' from 10.03 till 26.06.2016 at the Budafabriek, Kortrijk (BE).
Gluon and Budafabriek offer a two-month residency at the labs of LabMET (Laboratory of Microbial Ecology & Technology) in collaboration with the R2T consortium (Resource Recovery Technology). The goal of the residency is to create a new work which recounts the relationship between human beings and the element most essential for their survival: water. People are physically and mentally dependent on this blue gold. And yet we do not have a sustainable approach to water and this presents a risk for human life. Reckless water consumption, overfishing, industrial waste and melting polar ice caps are major global problems which can lead to an end to the life on earth as we know it today. Not a pretty outlook for a world population that is forecast to reach 10 billion by 2050.
All of this demands change. Therefore we invite you – artists – to develop, in collaboration with the researchers from LabMET, a prototype for a new work that refers to these problems and/or seeks solutions for a sustainable relationship between human beings and water.
For the creation of the prototype, which integrates innovative technological and scientific developments, you have the opportunity to collaborate with the experts of LabMET. For further development of the prototype the workshops of Gluon's partners are at your disposal (Fablabs, Medialabs). The prototype will be presented at the exhibition 'WATER.WAR' at the Budafabriek, Kortrijk (BE).
For the development and production of the prototype Gluon will grant up 5000 EUR to maximum one resident.
Timing:
- The application deadline is December 11th 2015, 11:00h (GMT+1) PM. Applicants will be informed of their application status by December 21st 2015
- The residency begins on January 4th and runs until March 10th 2016
- The installation will be exhibited from March 10th until June 26th 2016 at the Budafabriek, Kortrijk (BE)

About Gluon:
Gluon is a 'workshop of the future' that supports multidisciplinary initiatives, in which artists play an important role. Through the development and production of Art&Development labs, lectures, exhibitions and workshops for students Gluon maximises cross collaboration between artists, researchers and industries. By connecting artists, researchers and entrepreneurs, innovative ideas arise that an individual could not think of on his own. This approach results in a critical reflection upon technological and scientific developments, but it also stimulates innovation and experiment in non-creative environments.

About Budafabriek:
This former textile factory was converted into a workplace and presentation centre for transdisciplinary projects between artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, students and working citizens.
The mission of Budafabriek revolves around three core concepts:
LOVE: encounters and connections do not emerge on their own. Events and projects are organised with the aim of bringing innovative personalities from the economic, educational, artistic, healthcare sectors in contact with each other. Check: www.budalibre.be
WORK: trans-disciplinary joint creative projects are developed around specific projects. This is visible every day in the Buda::Lab and during the living labs for example that are covered in more detail in this subsidy application.
SHARE: results of the partnerships or inspiring (international) examples are shown occasionally to the public. This was the case during De Maakbar (06.10.2013-08.12.2013), Green Light District (08.11.14-08.02.15) and the upcoming exhibition WATER.WAR (12.03.16-26.06.2016).
