Gallery Experience Manager at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles

Overview The Gallery Experience Manager will help to create an accessible and enjoyable experience in the museum galleries that assist visitors with a general understanding of the art while also focusing on protecting the art. The Gallery Experience Manager will develop, implement, manage, and oversee this inaugural program for the museum, which includes all aspects of hiring and staffing with incoming Gallery Attendants.
During the Start-up Phase, the GE Manager shall: 1) complete all required training in the areas of security, including MOCA-specific procedures in artwork protection and fire/life safety, as well as MOCA-specific procedures for customer service and visitor engagement; 2) working with the Director of Education & Visitor Experience and Associate Director of Security & Maintenance, hire all subordinate staff (“Gallery Attendants†) and begin the process of recruiting, hiring, and training Gallery Attendants to cover up to 70% of the galleries in both of the museum’s downtown locations by mid-September, 2015. Ongoing responsibilities shall be the organization, implementation, and oversight of all personnel and activities in the museum’s Gallery Experience area, including: in-gallery visitor engagement, artwork protection, fire/life safety, and parcel check during all public hours and special events as scheduled.
Requirements · Hospitality-oriented individual with strong team leadership skills. Experience dealing with the public in a customer service or hospitality environment is required
· Possession of a Bachelor’s degree.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to quickly analyze situations and offer solutions.
· Two to five years experience working in museums or other arts organization, preferably with experience in contemporary art and art objects. Strong interest in contemporary art.
· Two five years supervisorial experience, with demonstrated effectiveness in training and motivating staff in a retail, hospitality, or other customer-service setting. Comfortable maintaining clear ground rules amongst employees evenhandedly.
· Flexible schedule; ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, at both downtown locations – MOCA Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, and The Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo – as assigned.
· In partnership with security personnel, willingness to act as a “first responder†in emergency situations such as earthquakes, power outages, or incidents requiring medical attention.
