looking for passionate, experienced TAs with a strong interest in social
justice for in-school and after-school residency opportunities at our
partner schools in the Bronx. TAs must have demonstrated previous experience
teaching their art form(s), ideally in NYC public school settings.

Director of the DreamYard Art Center
The Organization
DreamYard, founded in 1994, uses the arts, social justice pedagogy and
digital and connected learning to inspire youth, public schools and
communities. DreamYard programs develop artistic voice, nurture young
peoples’ desire to make change and cultivate the skills necessary to reach
positive goals. By committing to sustained learning opportunities along an
educational pathway, with 45 partnering public schools K-12th Grade, with
our own DY Prep HS School and at the DreamYard Art Center in Morrisania,
DreamYard supports young people as they work toward
higher learning, meaningful careers and social action.
The Community
DreamYard is focused entirely in the Bronx, a borough that possesses
incredible cultural, human and economic assets. The organization believes
that the arts are a necessary part of developing those assets to their
greatest potential.
The Position
The Director of the DreamYard Art Center reports directly to the
Co-Executive Directors. The Director collaborates with the Director of the
In School Programs Team, the Principal of the DreamYard Prep High School and
the Associate Directors for Professional Development and Pedagogy (the DY
Leadership Team) to set the overall vision and maintain the quality of
DreamYard’s work and programs, based on the Core Values and Core Actions of
the organization. The Director collaborates with the Leadership Team to
develop community and to help all DreamYard families and students drive
community change and access opportunity.
The Art Center Director leads and manages a top-notch Art Center team,
drives the development of the Art Center culture and is responsible for the
overall quality and vision of the Art Center Programs with a focus on
program development and evaluation. The Director of the Art Center is also
responsible for budget development and oversight, and for building and
managing an effective teaching artist team with the assistance of the
Associate Director and Program Coordinators.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate closely with the Executive Directors and the Leadership Team
on developing and implementing DreamYard’s arts and social justice pedagogy
based approach to community change and youth development;
* Define, develop goals for and maintain the vision and quality of all Art
Center Programs, based on DreamYard’s Instructional Voice philosophy and on
the DY Core Values;
* Develop and manage the Art Center Administrative Team, cultivating
leadership skills;
* Develop and manage, specifically, the Program Coordinators who run a
robust K-12th Grade Art Center pathway of programs;
* Manage and support the work of the College Counselor and Recruitment
Manager, a Parent/Community Engagement Coordinator, and a social worker or
social work partnering organization, all of whom report directly to the Art
Center Director;
* Collaborate with the Leadership Team on building and supporting a
top-notch team of teaching artists;
* Support, with the Associate Director, all teaching artists working within
the Art Center setting, including co-developing the Social Justice Pedagogy
Team program;
* Work closely with Art Center team, youth participants and families, as
well as development partners in the Bronx, to directly impact community
development and neighborhood transformation;
* Develop and Manage the Art Center Budget, with the support and guidance of
the Co-Executive Directors;
* Oversee Evaluation and Assessment of Art Center Programs;
* Engage in advocacy work, building on a powerful Art Center tradition, for
the arts and social justice in learning and in community change;
Requirements
● Masters in Education or Arts Education or equivalent experience;
● Experience and facility in social justice pedagogy;
● Experience or background in the arts;
● Three to five years’ experience as a Program or Center Director, or the
equivalent;
● Familiarity with New York City public school system or other urban school
systems;
● Mentoring or coaching experience required, work with Teaching Artists is
a plus;
● The Art Center Director position requires a five-day per week presence in
the Art Center; with programs running on Saturdays from October through May,
the Director’s schedule
may vary from week to week.

● Is comfortable working within an ever-changing and growing organization;
● Communicates directly and sensitively and is able to facilitate diverse
groups of stakeholders in working towards common goals;
● Is equally adept at working with and communicating with families,
participants, local leaders and DreamYard donors;
● Bronx-based is a plus, as she/he will be leading a deeply rooted
Bronx-based asset, the DreamYard Art Center.
● Is ideally a bi-lingual speaker in both English and Spanish.
