Seeking Director
Application deadline:
24 April 2015
Fundació Antoni Tàpies
Carrer Aragó, 255
08007 Barcelona
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies presents an international open competition to select a new Director to lead the institution in the coming years. The current director, Laurence Rassel, who has held the post since September 2008, announced in December that she would be stepping down in July, after completing her term as head of the institution. The aim of the competition is to continue the fundamental objectives and guidelines already deployed over the past 25 years, while overseeing the Fundació's adaptation to the new demands of the moment, and help give fresh impetus for the future.
Created in 1984 by the artist Antoni Tàpies to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art, the Fundació Antoni Tàpies opened its doors in 1990 and has the legal structure of a private foundation. As noted in the announcement, the new Director will ensure the preservation, study and dissemination of the work and ideas of Antoni Tàpies, and the promotion, dissemination and defence of the manifestations of the human spirit, especially in the field of contemporary art in all its various forms. The government and administration of the Fundació correspond to the Board, which is the body that represents and manages it, with all the powers determined by its Statutes.
The applications received will be analysed and evaluated by a committee of experts: Xavier Antich, Toni Tàpies, Manuel Borja-Villel, Catherine David, Pere Portabella, Josep Maria Carreté and Llucià Homs. This committee will issue its decision and submit a nomination to the Board of Trustees for appointment.
The requirements of the future Director, who exercises the role of executive and artistic director of the Fundació, include professional experience in the field of museums and contemporary art centres; leadership ability, communication and negotiation skills, as well as representing the Fundació and developing networks of complicity to articulate its projects; the ability to direct the financial management of the centre and stimulate initiatives to increase revenue and sponsorship and patronage projects. He/she will possess knowledge of the work of Antoni Tàpies and the trajectory of the Foundation to date, and be conversant with the wider cultural and artistic environment. Evaluation will take into account the assessment and diagnosis of the current state of affairs and the candidate's ability to articulate a diverse, innovative and attractive future programme for the Fundació.
Interested persons should submit their Curriculum Vitae (with clear documentation proving their merits) and a detailed statement (maximum of ten pages) containing, firstly, an assessment and diagnosis of the trajectory of the Fundació to date and at the present time, and, secondly, an outline of the candidate's proposed project for the coming years. The deadline for submission of nominations is 24 April.
