The multidisciplinary platform FORECAST at Haus der Kulturen der Welt invites emerging artists, curators, designers, composers, photographers, performers or architects to collaborate with one of six renowned mentors. Participants will propose, realize and showcase their project idea at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
These mentors have confirmed their participation in FORECAST 2015/16:
Catherine David, Curating, France
Markus Diebel, Design, USA
Lars Petter Hagen, Composition, Norway
Jürgen Mayer H., Architecture, Germany
Eric Joris, Scientific Fiction, Belgium
Bas Princen, Photography, Netherlands
In August 2015 (28–30) each mentor will gather five of the applicants for the public Forecast Forum at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. Participants may present their project idea and get feedback from their mentor as well as from artists and progressive thinkers from all over the world. These three days of workshops and presentations will form the matrix for developing and enhancing each project. The six most promising projects will be awarded an extended one-on-one-collaboration. From September to February 2016, these six participants will have the chance to work closely with each personal mentor.
In February 2016 (26–28), the six tandems present their individual projects during Forecast Festival at Haus der Kulturen der Welt: performances, presentations and/or installations of any format will be showcased to the public.
There is no eligibility nor restriction regarding discipline or genre. Admitted participants may benefit from a travel allowance (depending on their actual costs) and a production budget for realizing and presenting each project.
FORECAST is a cooperation of the cultural association Skills e. V. in Berlin and HKW – Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The platform has been developed by its artistic director Freo Majer. FORECAST is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
"Young artists search for inspiring experiences, whereas established artists may stall within fads. Freo Majer's concept to let young artists design the future under the mentorship of established ones, is right on: authentic creativity and innovation always have to be provocative. Art by itself is consciously aimless, and therefore vital for our future. As Walter Benjamin stated: 'Art is the governor of Utopia'"
–Prof. Dr. Hartmut Esslinger, HonRDI, designer
