Media Design Practices (MDP) at Art Center College of Design is pleased to announce the call for proposals for the MDP Design Residency 2015. The residency includes project space, a stipend, a project budget, and a multi-disciplinary graduate student design team. Each year, a distinguished jury selects a creative practitioner or team whose experimental design work engages emerging issues in science, technology, culture, and society. The residency concludes with a small exhibition and public presentation. Past residents have included Andrew Friend and Sitraka Rakotoniaina, Nicholas Nova, and Ilona Gaynor.

Call for proposals 2015
This call for proposals welcomes designers, filmmakers, architects, artists, hardware sketchers and software developers to submit proposals for design-driven research projects to be conducted in summer 2015 in residence in the MDP studio.

In the MDP, we define "media" broadly. Therefore, the residency is open to a range of disciplinary perspectives and practices. Projects that are the best fit will take a critical approach to network or digital culture; pervasive computing; information and communication technology; screen culture; or social media—as part of the subject or process of the work.

Housed in a former supersonic jet testing facility, the MDP studio is part of a complex called the Wind Tunnel Graduate Center for Critical Practice, which includes the Wind Tunnel Gallery, the Graduate Art MFA studios and galleries, and the Hixon Courtyard, in the heart of Art Center's south campus in Pasadena, California.

The award includes project space in the MDP studio for up to 14 weeks together with access to the College's renowned shops and production facilities, from letterpress to video editing to large-scale rapid prototyping. The resident will receive a 5,000 USD stipend and can submit a project budget for up to 5,000 USD. The residency includes a project team of two–five graduate student research assistants (media designers/design researchers) for seven weeks.

Given the modest budget and time frame, we consider this an opportunity to explore a discrete question as part of a larger investigation and/or an opportunity to test a new idea. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to successfully document and disseminate experimental design and research projects, and to manage a team. The residency is not suitable for the latter stages of a project's "finish." To be considered, projects must allow for discovery-through-making during the residency period.

Media Design Practices/Lab + Field at Art Center College of Design brings interdisciplinary design practices to a world of cultural and technological change. Graduates get an MFA in Media Design through an award-winning curriculum that features two intentionally divergent tracks called Lab and Field.

Each track prepares students to work in emerging roles and contexts for design. The productive friction between the tracks leads to new ideas and approaches, as students take on complex issues from a mix of critical perspectives. Lab-track students use design to explore the cultural impact of new ideas from science, technology, and culture. Field-track students use design to tackle social issues in a global context.
