TENURE TRACK POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Assistant Professor of Visual Arts
Animation
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Visual Arts
department seeks applications from creative and rigorous-thinking
animators/artists with expertise in both camera-based and computer
animation. Preference will be given to individuals possessing skills and
interest in working with alternative and hybrid forms of animation.
Applicants must possess a terminal degree in animation or related art field
and the ability to teach a range of courses within an innovative curriculum
that merges traditional approaches with new technologies and strong
conceptual, theoretical, and historical background.

The successful candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching,
research, and service. Course load assignment is 5 courses per year. The
department faculty's research and creative endeavors center on
interdisciplinary aspects of digital and time-based art forms, incorporating
these evolving technologies into the educational process for realizing
creative applications, ideas, and concepts. Both the department and UMBC
are committed to and supportive of quality faculty research and creative
activities.

Successful candidates for this position must demonstrate: (1) an established
record of scholarly and/or artistic achievement in animation relative to
rank; (2) previous university-level teaching experience; (3) a keen interest
in curriculum development and in the nurturing of new ideas; (4) the ability
to teach in many areas of animation; (5) an interest in mentoring MFA
graduate students in the Department’s Imaging and Digital Arts program.
UMBC is a medium-size public research university ranked in the category of
Research University - High Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation.
Located 15 minutes from Baltimore along the Washington-New York corridor,
UMBC is close to a major international airport and Amtrak. Undergraduate
admission is competitive. With approximately 90 majors, the
Animation/Interactive Media area has a central position in a
non-traditional Visual Arts department that offers both a BFA and BA degree
in the following areas: Art History and Museum Studies, Graphic Design,
Photography, Cinematic Arts, Intermedia, Animation/Interactive Media, and
Print Media plus an MFA in Imaging and Digital Arts. UMBC is especially

This tenure track, 9-month full time appointment begins August 2014. Salary
is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preference given to
