Brown Foundation Fellows Program of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, provides study or studio space, travel expenses and stipend to mid-career artists, writers and other professionals in the humanities
The Brown Foundation Fellows Program at Dora Maar House is an international program for artists and other professionals in the arts and humanities to further their work. The program is based in Ménerbes, France, and is administered by the MFAH. The fellowships, which are funded by The Brown Foundation of Houston, offer outstanding mid-career professionals round-trip travel expenses, a workspace and stipend for a one- to three-month stay.
Fellows work and live in the historic former residence of photographer and artist Dora Maar, the one-time muse and mistress of Pablo Picasso. Picasso gave Maar the 18th-century stone house as a gift in 1944. The four-story home, which has recently been fully renovated and updated, is located in the heart of Ménerbes, a 1,200-inhabitant village in the south of France long known for attracting artists and writers. Ménerbes remains home to an international community of painters, musicians, filmmakers, actors and others active in the arts and humanities.
Recent fellows have included art critic and painter Peter Plagens; poet Cleopatra Mathis; journalist and non-fiction writer Pamela Newkirk; novelist Kaui Hart Hemmings; and visual artists Jane South and Jon Kessler.
