Red Hook Initiative (RHI) is a community center in Red Hook, Brooklyn. RHI believes that social change to overcome systemic inequities begins with empowered youth. In partnership with community adults, we nurture young people in Red Hook to be inspired, resilient, and healthy, and to envision themselves as co-creators of their lives, community and society. We envision a Red Hook where all young people can pursue their dreams and grow into independent adults who contribute to their families and community.
The Director of Community Development is a member of the Senior Management team at RHI responsible for overseeing programs that focus on building resident leadership to impact Red Hook’s future and to increase neighborhood sustainability. Much of this work will be done through strategic partnerships with local organizations, community residents, and government agencies. In keeping with RHI’s core mission, young people will be involved in the majority of these activities. The Director of Community Development will maintain a bird’s eye view of the program’s overall performance, troubleshooting barriers toward achieving long-term community sustainability.
The responsibilities of the Director of Community Development include but are not limited to:
Build and Oversee Community-Based Programs:
Develop opportunities for Red Hook residents to build leadership abilities and to influence their community’s future.
Oversee RHI’s organizing-focused work including the Social Justice Fellows program, community-wide initiatives around participatory budgeting, and local organizing campaigns that relate to youth issues.
Oversee the RH WiFi project, working with the team to set goals and track progress toward stated objectives while ensuring that project direction ties closely to RHI’s core mission.
Act as the liaison between RHI community groups doing Hurricane Sandy organizing; ensure progress toward stated partnership goals.
Manage and explore requests and new program ideas that would strengthen the Red Hook community.

Build and Manage External Partnerships
Participate in weekly meetings of the Red Hook Coalition representing RHI and contributing toward Coalition-wide goals for rebuilding and strengthening the Red Hook community.
Represent RHI within the Alliance for Just Rebuilding; attend meetings and ensure that Red Hook voices are included in the city-wide process.
Chair a “working group” of the Red Hook Coalition that involves community members working toward a stated goal that is part of the neighborhood plan for re-building.

Build strategic partnerships with local tenant groups, civic groups and other Red Hook-based groups.

Develop and Launch RHI’s First Responders Program
Work closely with NYCHA to build an emergency preparedness plan for the Red Hook Houses, which uses RHI’s model of identifying and training local leaders to respond in times of crisis.
Build a structure and system through which community residents receive training to formalize a social safety net system within public housing in Red Hook.
Manage CERT training opportunities for community members, including youth.

Management and Administration
Effectively align program and staff support to meet long-term goals.
Foster a team-oriented, supportive, accountable work environment among community development team.
Contribute to grant writing and reporting process as relates to community organizing and sustainability.
Manage budgets for programs and work closely with Director of Development around related fundraising initiatives.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to supervise a team with diverse skills and strengths, including young people.
Knowledge of program development, implementation, and evaluation.
Demonstrated knowledge of local and citywide organizing community.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Detail-oriented with proven ability to keep accurate records.
Willingness to collaborate on projects and work with a team.
Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
Ability to work independently.

Experience & Qualifications
Master’s Degree with 2-3 years of management and community organizing experience or B.A./B.S with 4+ years of experience.
Prior experience working with coalitions or organizing campaigns, building community relationships.
English/Spanish Bilingual, preferred.
Red Hook resident, preferred.

High School Program Coordinator

The High School Program Coordinator guides the high school team to support youth (14to 18-year-olds) to achieve their goals within the areas of education, employment, and personal development. The High School Program Coordinator will maintain a bird’s eye view of the program’s overall performance, troubleshooting barriers for youth or for the High School team in achieving program outcomes. Additionally, the High School Program Coordinator will support case management from a strengths-based perspective, ensuring that every young person has a long-term post-secondary plan.
The responsibilities of the High School Program Coordinator include but are not limited to:
Program Development and Implementation
Oversee curriculum development and program planning for comprehensive youth programs.
Manage work plan toward annual goals.
Evaluate intermediate and long-term program outcomes.
Connect with outside organizations to integrate programs and opportunities around education, employment, and enrichment to the HS program.
Guide the planning and execution of social events and special activities in keeping with overall program goals.
Oversee Comprehensive Case Management
Oversee intake and enrollment process for high school aged youth.
Oversee implementation of individual participant plans.
Monitor and address issues of attendance and attrition; oversee outreach efforts around Youth Leader engagement.
Coordinate communication between RHI and parents.
Check-in with high school team about individual participant progress and assist them in trouble-shooting barriers to completion of goals.
Staff Supervision
Provide individual, weekly supervision to: SW Coordinator, Education Coordinator, Youth Jobs Developer, Reproductive Health Educator, Program Assistant, and part-time program facilitators.
Plan for and facilitate high school team meetings.
Create supportive team environment.
Assist Director of Training and Evaluation to identify staff training needs.
Provide leadership in conflict resolution and crisis management.
Logistical
Collect data and compile program reports.
Support database management.
Ensure timesheet and time clock entries are accurate for payroll.
Manage basic program budget decisions.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Strong management and supervisory skills.
Knowledge of strength-based case management approaches.
Must be enthusiastic about community-based work and youth development.
Knowledge of alternative post-secondary pathways and excited about an integrated approach to post-secondary preparation.
Demonstrated knowledge of local and citywide resources for social services.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Detail-oriented with proven ability to keep accurate records.
Strong organizational, planning, and problem solving skills.
Ability to work independently.
Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred and 2-3 years supervisory experience.
4-5 years working in field of social work or youth development.
Experience developing and supporting staff to develop curriculum and programs.
Red Hook resident, preferred
English/Spanish, Bilingual preferred
