Position Summary:

Responsible for leading early childhood music, beginning string pedagogy, guitar, piano, percussion, woodwinds, brass, or beginning choir for students starting as young as three years old through elementary ages. The Teaching Artist will ensure the highest quality music experience for the participants and work with fellow teaching artists to develop the curriculum that follows SCFMC's mission.

Duties:

As a SCFMC teaching artist, responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Collaborating with fellow SCFMC teachers to create a shared curriculum, pedagogy and culture
• Teaching classes on respective instruments to preschool through elementary aged children
• Attending music pedagogy professional development sessions
• Preparation and communication with other music teachers, interns, conductors, Program Director and parents
• Supporting the SCFMC philosophy and community and help facilitate community and family involvement.

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teaching/performing artist
• Strong commitment to the teaching philosophy of SCFMC
• Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience a plus
• Strong knowledge of instrumental repertoire, curriculum and pedagogy
• Three years experience teaching beginning instrumentalists or vocalists
• Experience leading and conducting ensembles
• Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
• Experience working in under-served communities
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
• Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and peers as an artist, teacher and citizen
• Ability to work under frequent observation
• Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus
