Northumbria University and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art have joined forces to create a prestigious new facility for contemporary art, research and education in the vibrant heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Our Master of Fine Art programme is situated in the new award winning BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art at BALTIC 39.

Fine art at Northumbria University grows from strength to strength following the successful launch of BxNU, the ground-breaking partnership between Northumbria University and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The partnership has already been recognised by the Times Higher Education Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts and one of the factors behind this recognition is the BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art at BALTIC 39.

Building on the Faculty of Art, Design and Social Sciences' existing excellence in Fine Art provision, Northumbria is launching an innovative Master of Fine Art (MFA) programme in September 2013. The MFA is a two-year programme which provides the opportunity for students to develop careers as professional artists in the dynamic context of BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art in Newcastle's city centre. The MFA occupies a pivotal position in a unique learning environment where a vibrant studio culture is enhanced by the curatorial, critical and practical expertise of the BALTIC team.

Northumbria is also offering five BALTIC Scholarships for the MFA; students awarded a BALTIC Scholarship will receive £3000 towards the cost of MFA study over the two-year duration of the programme.

Northumbria is widely recognised for the quality of its scholarship and research in fine art practice. At BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art, the collaboration with BALTIC is led by BALTIC Professor, Christine Borland; an artist with a global reputation for collaborative, interdisciplinary practice-led research. A former Turner Prize nominee, Christine's practice explores ethical issues generated in science and medicine, which impact society as a whole. Professor David Campbell leads the development of postdoctoral and postgraduate research programmes. David's research focuses on the interface between social identity and cultures of consumption. His professional practice includes the production and exhibition of artwork as a member of Common Culture, critical writing and curatorial projects.
