Education Concerts Manager
Founded in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's mission is to perform, present, and promote music in its varied forms at the highest level of excellence to a diverse and large audience, both at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. Position Summary:
The Education Concerts Manager will be responsible for developing age-appropriate LA Phil concerts for families and youth, and creating and implementing a program that supports young musicians in school and community-based youth orchestras. The Manager will be responsible for connecting, when appropriate, programs to one another, and to other LA Phil education initiatives. It is also the Manager's responsibility to guide appropriate evaluation, assessment, and documentation of the programs, and to develop, oversee, and track project budgets.
Position Elements:
The Education Concerts Manager, reporting to the Education Programs Manager, will work on the successful execution, sustainability, and ongoing innovation and improvement of the following programs:
Education Concerts
• Develop, assess, and oversee 16 performances of five or more unique, fully scripted, cast, and rehearsed educational orchestra concert productions targeted for elementary and secondary school and family audiences each season.
• Develop, assess, and oversee the summer world music program for children at the Hollywood Bowl.
• Responsible for facilitating the vision and aesthetics of the LA Phil through its concerts for students and families.
• Hire, supervise, and manage artistic personnel including directors, performers, designers, and stage managers, etc.
• Collaborate and communicate regularly with Orchestra Management, Artistic, and Library on space reservations, rehearsals, conductors, artist needs, and specific production elements.
Program for Young Musicians
• Design and implement an effective program that supports school and community-based youth orchestra students and directors while best utilizing the resources and direction of the LA Phil, including management of Youth Orchestra Festival Day.
• Create appropriate applications, contracts, and systems for participants.
• Develop and maintain collaborative and productive relationships with key players in the Los Angeles youth orchestra scene (music directors, conductors, administrators, etc.)
• Actively manage all communications, including information about classes, rehearsals, tickets, and special events.
Other duties as assigned which could include but are not limited to assisting Education and Community staff and other educational and community engagement initiatives and related communications, concert duty, etc.
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree required
• Experience producing music education programs
• Strong knowledge of orchestral music, ability to read scores, and experience working with orchestras
• Experience working with intermediate to advanced young musicians in different settings with demonstrable ability to develop age-appropriate material
• Familiarity with AEA, SDC, and Actor's Equity compliance, contracts, and work rules a plus
• Knowledge of state or national learning standards a plus
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrable ability to effectively facilitate meetings and build consensus and teams among groups of artists and musicians
• Experience in public presentations, providing professional and appropriate business level written information utilizing various media
• Ability to design effective systems to self-support the management and implementation of programs
• Ability to work well on a team and in a high-pressure, multi-tasking environment
• Strong desk top computer skills and effective time management and organizational skills
• Demonstratively detail oriented with ability to maintain high productivity and quality standards
• Availability for local travel, and frequent evening and weekend work
