AMP: Artists' Meeting Place and Resource Collective

Diavolo Dance Theatre is premiering our newest creation Fluid Infinities at the Hollywood Bowl Sept 5, 2013, through a unique collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. We are in search of an accomplished costume designer to work with the Artistic Director Jacques Heim to design and create the costumes for the final section of a 3 part commission. The first two installments of Diavolo's collaboration with the LA Phil, Foreign Bodies and Fearful Symmetries, the original inspiration came from a cube and culminates on a clear stage with the dancers looking into the future. Fluid Infinities, the final installment in this Trilogy, represents the future they are looking into.

Set to the music of Philip Glass Symphony No.3, this future that Fluid Infinities establishes is an alternate reality where life continues in a new and different form, like another dimension or the afterlife. The structure we have created for Fluid Infinities is a quarter sphere. A single piece of curving metal with an organic pattern of openings across the face, evoking imagery of the craters of Mars, a honeycomb of bees, an abstract eye, a shifting brain, or an undiscovered starship. This partial dome sits on a reflective metallic floor that creates a surface of light, bouncing color in cyclical designs. The dome and the reflective floor together craft the essence of duality and oneness. As the dome moves and shifts, offering dramatic changes of perspective, the audience will see various dichotomies reflected: internal and external, light and dark, top and bottom, life and death, all being explored by the dancers. We would like the costumes to represent this altered state of existence, where each dancer has individuality yet all related, where they look naked yet clothed, where the rules of physics are just a little different.

Stipend will be offered for design fee, materials, and costume construction.
Deadline for initial design concept submission is May 1, 2013.
Deadline for final submission of completed design is June 1, 2013
Deadline for fabrication of completed designs is July 1, 2013
