Çudamani Summer Institute
June 23-July 14, 2013 www.cudamani.org
For fifteen years, Çudamani has provided exceptional instruction to hundreds of children, youth, adults and international musicians in their village of Pengosekan, Bali. The company's accomplishments in both traditional and innovative forms has earned Çudamani an international reputation with tours to the US (twice at UCLA Royce Hall), Canada, Italy, Greece, etc. In the 2012-13 season, the company was invited to tour twice by Arts Midwest. In April they will have completed a nine state tour.
Çudamani now accepts applications from musicians and dancers from around the world to participate in the seventh Çudamani Summer Institute. This rigorous course of study of Balinese music will take place within the village compound that is the home of this outstanding professional company.
Intensive study five days a week under the artistic direction of Dewa Putu Berata and Emiko Susilo brings a progressive pedagogy to the study of gamelan and Balinese dance. The gamelan is fundamentally composed of percussion instruments. These bronze instruments include gongs of all sizes, metallophones, and horizontal drums. Dance study under the direction of Emiko Susilo includes master teachers considered the best in their field. Unique to the CSI is the presence of Çudamani musicians and dancers who tutor and work alongside each student. This affords an accelerated progress that is not possible in any other study program.
Within the three week program invited lectures by guest speakers, observation of rehearsals and Bali Arts Festival performances as well as guided field trips to temples and scenic places in Bali make this an intense, carefully planned, and culturally oriented experience. After six successful years, Çudamani Summer Institute is recognized for their ability to work with inexperienced as well as advanced students. With a team of teachers beside you, there could not be a better way to immerse yourself into the world of Balinese performing arts and Bali.
On-line application deadline: March 1 (for first choice accommodation). For more information and application please see: www.cudamani.org or write Professor Judy Mitoma at jmitoma@arts.ucla.edu
