From 16 July until 15 October 2012, artists from the southern circuit may submit up to three works in any languages or formats.
The International Contemporary Art Festival SESC_Videobrasil celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2013, and affirms its position as one of the major Brazilian initiatives for the dissemination of art. It so happens because it has always been a trailblazer, at first by dedicating to video art in a fledgling context and later by paying attention to artistic production from the geopolitical Southern countries, which are peripheral or only circumstantially settled into the art main system. The Southern Panoramas exhibition, the central segment of the Festival, toasts the art of that circuit, which covers Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Oceania, and Southern Asia.
The Festival once again places itself under the sign of change in its 18th edition, a stance which has characterized its trajectory from the 1980s until now. Dynamism and restlessness mark the commitment to being ever-attentive to contemporary issues which in different ways guide the artistic experience in contemporaneity. For that reason, the Festival reinvents itself constantly: it reconfigures, expands, and improves its modes of selection, exhibition, and reflection.
In this 18th edition, Southern Panoramas comprises not only works submitted and selected via open call, but also works made by guest artists. While the entry-based selection always brings an important element of surprise, risk, and renewal, the input of guest artists adds vigorous tensing-up relationships to the show's curatorial construction, deeming its proposal denser. The central idea behind this new setup is to articulate a curatorial process that is guided by issues and contexts originated by the submitted works.
Open 16 July through 15 October 2012, the Southern Panoramas call selects artists from those regions. Works in any languages or formats can participate. The exhibition, which is due to take place as of October 2013, will include awards for residency in international partner institutions. The application process for selection is totally online. Access Videobrasil website from 16 July to learn more about the Festival and the Southern Panoramas show, and participate with up to three projects.
