AMP: Artists' Meeting Place and Resource Collective

Dear Artists,

We would like to inform you about our wonderful Artist Residency Program at Los Feliz Charter School For The Arts. The mission of our program is to provide a free studio space and stipend to talented artists, while offering our students exposure to a wide variety of creative minds and artistic media.

At LFCSA we believe in the value of "project-based learning." Our project-based curriculum is structured to allow students to pursue individual educational goals while simultaneously requiring them to collaborate with others on a shared objective. As such, we strongly believe that the Artist In Residence at our school should provide a model for this kind of approach. We are looking for Artists that have a specific project in mind that they will be working on so that our students can get a felt sense of "art-as-process." The goal is for our students to witness how art can be born from an initial germinating idea and progress through various stages of evolution, towards some kind of maturation or culmination.

We are keenly looking for specific ways in which the Artist in Residence will be able to actively engage the students in his/her process, or ways in which he/she will make that process accessible to them. We have no limits regarding Art discipline, (visual, dance, music, theater, etc.) media, or project-type, but keep in mind that the studio space is roughly 15 X 20 feet. LFCSA is a progressive, art-centered elementary charter school in Los Angeles incorporating grades K-6. The application for the Residency at LFCSA should include the following items for review from our panel:

A. Project Proposal (1-3 pages), detailing the project in mind and the ways in which you are planning on making it accessible to the kids.
B. An estimation of the actual residency term. Residency terms last roughly 3-6 weeks. Please include an estimation of the actual hours between 8AM and 3PM, Monday through Friday, that you would be able to be on sight at our school, (with a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week).
C. Bio (2-3 paragraphs) and resume. Please include relevant links to websites, videos, etc.

If your proposal is accepted, we would also require:

D. A Live Scan / Background Check (required by the state of CA) paid for by LFCSA at a specific partner location.
E. TB Test results (required by the state of California). [Results are valid for 4 years and we will accept previous test results if they are within this time frame. The TB Test can be done for free at a clinic in Hollywood CA.]
F. A short version of your Bio and Project Proposal for our school newsletter (1-3 paragraphs).
G. Final Residency Evaluation submitted by you (1-2 pages) detailing your experience at LFCSA and what you were able to accomplish during your residency regarding your specific Art project.
H. A final presentation/workshop to the LFCSA community (60 minutes) pertaining to the work undertaken, and the experiences shared, during your residency.

In case your Project proposal is accepted, we would also require you to familiarize yourself with our Cool Tools binder. Cool Tools was created to ensure a caring community in which all students feel safe to learn and play without threats of physical, verbal, or non-verbal harassment of any type. The binder includes a list of our time-tested and research-based approaches for teaching kids social and conflict-resolution skills.
