Hi!
cultureID, which I have co-founded with Deb King, is working with BITAHR (The Boston Initiative to Advance Human Rights) on a multi-faceted
event to bring awareness to modern day slavery.
We are reaching out to artists to contribute art measuring 4" x 6" to be sold to underwrite the event. All info is below. Please pass onto your communities.
The Boston Initiative to Advance Human Rights (BITAHR) and cultureID invites artists to donate a 4" x 6" original artwork for the Postcards for Humanity exhibition and benefit sale. Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media are all welcome.
Postcards for Humanity is an exhibition and benefit sale of original postcard-sized works of art by established and emerging artists. All works will be exhibited on February 2nd at the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, a large gallery in the vibrant South End neighborhood of Boston, in conjunction with the BITAHR 2012 Film Forum: Fighting Trafficking Through Film to be held at the Modern Theater, also in Boston. On February 3rd the postcard art will be displayed at the Modern Theater during the 3-day film forum. Additionally, cultureID will host an online gallery of all work on it's site. Any work not sold at the event will be hung in the offices of BITAHR and available for future purchase.
It is estimated that up to 27 million people were held in slavery throughout the world in 2008, more than any other time in history. It is estimated that 79% of those trafficked into modern-day slavery are exploited in the commercial sex trade. In 2008, the average price of a man, woman or child was less than a new cell phone or--about 90 dollars. These devastating numbers result in a the greatest proliferation of a criminal industry in history--our world is creating a new trafficking victim every 10 minutes.
We find ourselves in a world where more than 1 million children are exploited by the commercial sex trade each year. Hidden and afraid to come forward because of threats and physical abuse, human trafficking is now the second most widespread crime in the world, second only to drug trafficking. The immensity of the problem is mind-boggling. The fundraiser funds will first fund the film forum. Remaining funds will fund the HERA, Legal, Film and Congo Projects.
The Boston Initiative to Advance Human Rights (BITAHR) supports public education regarding human trafficking, anti-trafficking legislation, and programs that promote victim protection and rehabilitation so that the survivors may reenter mainstream society. As part of it's mission, BITAHR provides outreach and education promoting the empowerment of children and young women. It uses domestic and international channels of investigation, intervention and funding to end the sexual commodification of children and young women in the US and abroad. For more information on The Boston Initiative to Advance Human Rights, please visit their website at www.bitahr.org.
