AMP: Artists' Meeting Place and Resource Collective

Photographers worldwide who document human rights issues can apply for a new grant.

World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch created a grant worth €20,000 (about US$28,000) to honor Tim Hetherington, a photojournalist killed in Libya this year.

British-born Hetherington, who lived in the U.S., was killed by a grenade in Misrata in April. He is said to be the first British journalist to die since uprisings began in the country.

"This award is a tribute to Tim Hetherington's extraordinary talent for bringing human rights stories into vivid focus," said Carroll Bogert, deputy executive director for external relations at Human Rights Watch. "The best photojournalism changes the world. We hope this grant will help more photographers think of their work in those terms."

The annual grant seeks to reward a career history of documenting critical human rights stories and an ability to draw together diverse elements into a compelling multimedia feature.

The deadline is October 15, 2011.
