*CALL FOR ARTIST PARTICIPATION*
Planning meetings:
Thurs Sept 1, Tues Sept 6, Wed Sept 21, Thurs Oct 6, 2011 / 7-9 pm
at Jerri Allyn's: 5507 Village Green, LA, CA 90016 (La Brea and
Rodeo)
From Debate to Create
Join Jerri Allyn and Inez Bush to prepare for an event where we will
creatively explore contemporary issues in Performance Art.
Through a structure of debate, caucus, collaboration, performance and
voting that echoes United Nations proceedings, artists and audience will
come together to explore issues in contemporary Performance Art. By
developing creative proposals (art, music, theatre or dance), the goal
is to provide a performative context for artists to demonstrate the
importance of the arts in solving conflicts.
During the planning meetings, participants develop the overall questions
for debate, begin thinking about their own debate, and organize or join
a team. The final positions will be presented and performed for an
audience at LACE as part of Los Angeles Goes Live: Performance Art in
Southern California 1970-1983. Los Angeles Goes Live is part of Pacific
Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty.
Possible topics for debate about the state of Performance Art today:
• Does Performance Art make a contribution to civic life, and could
communities financially support the work of their artists?
• Is it possible for artists to feel individual ownership of
collective Public Practice initiatives that are for the betterment of
the community in which they work?
• Should there be restrictions in presenting controversial
Performance Art to a general public that may get offended?
